I have a rattling sound comming from the lower part of my motor. My question is could it be the oil pump and not a bearing like everyone around here has told me. Another thing i find strange is i used a long socket extension kinda like a stethoscope and the noise is louder when i put the extension against the tranny then when i put it against the oil pan. When i put it on the upper parts of the motor i didnt hear much at all. Ive never heard a oil pump go bad so this is why im posting this question. Thanks for the time.

Try draining the oil into a clean pan and see if there is any babbit in there. If you see anything that looks like goldish glitter, then its not looking good. If you see nothing there, cut apart the oil filter and spread out the pleats. look for bits of metal in there. Do this first as it is the easiest thing to check.

If both are clean of any metalic debris, then your bearings are probably okay, for now anyway. At that point, you need to isolate the rattle. If you suspect the tranny, and it is an auto, just remove the torque converter bolts and slide the converter away from the flex plate, then start it up and see if it still rattles. If manual, put it in gear with the clutch pushed in and see if it rattles. That won't tell you if the rattle is coming from the clutch though or input shaft, but is worth a shot.
My guess would be bad bearings and the sound is easier to hear through the walls of the tranny case than through the cast iron block of the engine. imo

Check for cracked flexplate or loose converter bolts.

usually if it is a cracked flex plate, it will only make the noise when idling or off the throttle. If giving gas it will not make the sound. I know this first hand redface.gif

Yea the sound is just at idle and when i give it gas, im gonna try the one idea of taking out the converter bolt and startin it this afternoon, thanks for the help guys.

I just fixed a sound that was coming from the lower front of my engine.First I thought it was the power steering pump, then the water pump, turned out it was the front pulley on the lower pulley that attaches to the balancer. The front pulley was loose. Replaced it with another pulley , problem and noise gone.

That's not an uncommon problem. The lower pulleys on GM's have been known come loose and even wobble out the bolt holes.

I am also hearing a weird noise only mine is at about 3,000 RPM and higher, other wise from 1000 to 2900 RPM no noise then at 3000 this rattling starts. It's no ping cause it does that too a little with this low octane gas around here.
Any ideas.

Well i took the converter bolts out, pulled it away from the flywheel and saw a suprize. 2 of the bolts that hold the flywheel to the crank had come out and were making the sound as the rattled around the space between the flywheel and the convrter. Thanks for the help guys, and i just have to say im so glad it wasnt inside the engine.

If it's your bearings, turn the motor on, leaving it in park, and rev it up. If you hear a somewhat high pitched pinging noise that "rattles" faster then the rev, it's the bearings.

Any ideas. If you are feeling a vibration as you drive, and feel it especially while you are on the freeway, it's most likely you have a cracked or warped flexplate.
