Would putting a dynomax bullet muffler onto a street car, and thend rive it around be illegal?

Probably loud enough to get you a ticket.

well all i has it a mild 350, do you still think it would be that loud?

I've heard they don't do much for deadening sound. More for the "The NHRA class calls for a muffler so this is technically a muffler", race cars.

You could try it, but I'd bet you'd be out $60!

I don't think they quiet it down any. Bill

Brian71malibu
Feb 17th, 05, 4:09 PM
well i dont want to quiet it down, i would run open headers if i could. i was just wondering if i got pulled over would they be able to say that its not considered a muffler

When you go to court for your ticket, you would have to prove that your muffler(s) are DOT/CARB approved for the street. Which those, are not. And you would pay the ticket, and that cop would notice you a 2nd time in a heart beat if you didn't change them.

I have those my cammed up 383 stroker now, it sounds awesome, but it does rattle the neighbors windows..probably not best for a street car..

Don't know how things work there, but here we've got Unnecessary Noise. 2 chamber Flowmasters and a 428. For some reason, I always got nailed when I went to WOT ;) . Legal mufflers or not, the judges always side with the officers judgement call.

Right now it seems that they're letting many of the ricers slide, but I know one guy who had to replace his Del Sol's muffler. They won't force you to change it, but they'll dollar you to death if you don't.

I had an ill-in-noise state patrol tell me that if it's not an original replacement muffler then technically it's illegal.
I have Walker Super Turbo's all the way out the back and they're quiet!
So I think he was hearing the engine screaming just before he turned around graemlins/clonk.gif

I have seen (and heard) many of the harley guys run straight pipes and you know how that sounds. They seem to get away with it. The noise level will also be a factor of how big a pipe you run with the muffler.

Why not go with some of those electronic cut-outs? My buddy put them on his Nova, flick a switch and you're instantly in loudsville. You see ads for them in the back of just about every muscle car mag.

If you are doing 110 in a 35 when they hear you might have something to do with it as well.

My car is pretty loud idling and never had a hassle when an officer pulls up.

I think it has more to do with what you are doing when they hear you.

Agreed, though not up to you guys standard I had a 2000 Z28 I ran a muffler-less exhaust one (still had cats though, that helped) and it was friggin LOUD when I got on it. Just kept my foot out of it when there was any chance of the popo being around to complain.

Technically, you dont HAVE to run mufflers since there is no federal noise law, and they dont effect emissions. State and Local noise violations are another matter.

I probably shouldnt say this but it is both a serious and somewhat funning incident that happened once.

Noise pollution can be a bit of a problem for some people. As much as I like the sound of a great running car to others it can be disturbing.

As an example my elderly parents lived with me in the last years of their lives as they could no longer be on their own.Just a couple years ago this little incident happened.

A guy moved in not far away and had a Camaro with a stout engine in it. He had a big mechanical cam and a gear drive , Headers , Flowmasters , turndowns
and 4.88's.....So this car made more noise than most do....

Well it was around 5:00 AM one morning as the 1st time he drives this car , comes cruzing past my house at my " guess " around 3500 RPM....The windows were rattling and the house shook.... I heard a scream from my moms room and ran in to see what was wrong..... You see my mother was 85 at the time and she was blind.... She was scared big time and she thought we were haveing an earthquake !.... And too be honest with you it shook enough to feel like one.... Took me a couple minutes to get here calmed down and explain what was going on.... But when someones medical condition is such that she was elderly , frail , blind , had high BP and had previously suffered both stroke and heart attack..... you need to calm her down quick....

Anyhoo .. other than that gear drive ( I despise gear drives ) it was a great sounding Camaro....
But the unfortunate thing was that despite it's great sound to a gear head to others it can be more than just annoying... as more than just gear heads have to hear the noise also.

All in all sometimes moderation can be a cool thing. graemlins/beers.gif

I've been running a pair of dynomax bullets for almost a year now with the pipes exiting in front of the axle... it's loud, but no problems with the law. I usually get nothing but thumbs-ups from cops smile.gif

It's also a fact that constant loud noise will totally destroy your hearing in very short order. A good Borla sounds pretty to me, however if your going to go long distances quiet is better.

Harold Sutton,

Just wanted to thank you.... I know what I wrote would be unpopular at best , but you certinally are correct on consideration is something we should practice more of . graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Cops can say your arse is blue if they desire and there's nothing you can do about it but agree. So if Mr. "I'm on a power trip because I have a badge" says your mufflers are illegal, guess what...youz a gitt'n a tikit!

As far back as I can remember she's let me and my friends take as many grapes from her vine as we liked. We played football on her big lawn as kids. She never got mad at us, we helped her get rid of an Opossum once.

My friends have been bugging me to cut the tail pipes of my car since 2002 when I got the car. Knowing that my flowmasters would get much louder without the tails, I've kept them because I know that I'll fire up the Chevelle and drive off at midnite to go meet up with friends, or at 5 AM to go study during finals. I doubt my little ol' neighbor is awake at those times, and I don't like to be woken up during my sleep, so the tailpipes are staying.

A very cool thing for you to do ! And in the long run how much real overall bennifit would there have been taking the tailpipes off anyway ? Sounds to me like a win / win situation. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Ever notice how most really fast street cars don't need to impress anyone with any extra noise while crusin??

Couple of old expressions that come to mind that are in my opinion very cool ;)
Some of you youngsters may not have heard them but they are:

Walk softly & carry a big stick,,, &
If it don't run, Chrome it,,, :D

or put a gear drive on it,, ok, ok, I admit this last one I just made up

I like them both & again, just my opinion but every street car I had was a lot more fun if it was fast & reasonably quiet, at least until you got after it ;) ,,

It's a hell of a lot more fun to destroy that geardrive whining (if it sounds like a blower it should be a blower),, no muffler soundin pile next to you with a very fast nice lookin "it can't be fast cause it's to quiet ride" than to be in the other lane makin lot's of noise,,

At least it was for me graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Hi Al, It ain't unpopular with me,,, I like your style graemlins/beers.gif

I love the cackle of them, "Cop-calling", glasspacks!!

BUT do yourself a favor AND run only the W/D/T perforated inner pipe ones AND full length tailpipes out the back!!

AND they will flow almost as much as straight pipes!!

Just look into the really high flowing mufflers and a lot of them are just modern, EXPENSIVE, glasspack types like an E-brock RPM and a Dynomax Ultra Flo, imho...

Thanks Mike !

I really didnt want to rain on anyones picknick... but since cars tend to have a single owner at any givein time , it becomes an " I Want " sort of issue when deciding what to do about your ride.... And in general very little thought goes into the consiquenses <sp> of those decisions..... especially from other peoples point of view.

Anyhoo I didnt mean to **** anyone off just to pass along a thought.

Pdq,

I agree , many of these Magnaflow , Dynomax and others are just newer versions of the old tried and true glasspacks.... maybe a different packing material and shape and size but the principle is the same... frictional, accoustical absorption.
