Just wondering what you guys are running for engines and what they get in mpg?

I run a 350 with 10.5:1 ratio with a 700 CFM carb, vortec heads and mines pretty ugly when it comes to gas. 402 hp sucks it up pretty quick. I cant even bear to think what mine gets...whether its gallons to the mile or vice versa. :D

I bet mine is under 10 mpg, if I keep my foot out of it. If my foot is in it, I can watch the gas gauge go down! So at that point 1 or 2 mpg's!

Big Block-468 10.5:1 compression, comp cam .510" lift 230 duration.

im afraid to even guess on what mine gets, but its probably somewhere in the 7-10mpg range when im just cruising. 9.4:1 412 small block with D1SC

7 mpg was the best ever, and thats at a steady 55-60 mph. Anything else is less, and with your foot in it, a LOT less. 10.5:1 540cid.

Pretty much says it all. But if I had to guess I would say 3 to 4 mpg on a good day

maybe 10.

I had a 472cid engine in a 83 grand prix that got the better part of 15. So much torque that it really never worked the engine hard. Is that a good enough excuse to build a bigger engine? I'm thinking maybe.

Actually got about 14 mpg on a 200 mile trip last year but kept the max speed around 60 due to vibration above that. Vibration fixed now and MPG went right into the toilet. :beers: In town if I get 8 or 9 MPG it is cause for celebration. With my foot in it...well the guys at the gas station love me.
Besides how can ya keep your foot out of cars like ours? Thats why we love em' in the first place.

Wheezy 350 (about 300 HP on a good day:noway: )/TH350/3.73 Gears...maybe time for 700R4 with over $3.00/gallon now.

When someone asks me what my 69SS 11:1 427, T400, 410:1 rear gets for mileage I tell them about $50 a drive. Premium around here is now over $5 a gallon. Oh well, there are far worse things I could be doing with my money.

Profile says Saskatchewan, Canada. I can believe the higher prices

My 67 Elky gets 12-15 but I don't drive it too much - mainly errands for the wife for stuff that won't fit in the trunk of her car. :D You basic 327/275 with Edelbrock intake/carb and later model TH350.

My current car is still under construction...but my last Malibu got about 16 on the hwy.

It was a 9:1 400 sbc with a comp 270 cam, Dart S/R heads. Hedman headers, 2.5 torque tec exhaust and 3.42 gears. I kept the speed below 65 mph. Anything above that and it would drop off dramatically.

Interesting note; that 16 mpg was with a Carter 625 "black stallion" carburetor. When I switched to a holley 650 dp it probably dropped by 5 mpg.

My '68 SS has a '69 L-72 11.25:1, 427 and I'm running 3.55 gears and a 4-speed, I do mostly locale back road driving with maybe a short 7 mile drive on the hi-way once in a while and I get a wopping 7 MPG. :( . At $3.30 a gallon, it's a tough nut.

:secret: ... But it's still fun at any price.

With my '69 Malibu, last year I easily got 22mpg on the highway (and ran a 13.82 :) ) but I think I could get 24 with a little more tuning... however, in a quest for 12s, I've swapped the 3.08s for 4.10s so I will probably drop down to ~19mpg

I'm hoping money will allow for a 6-speed swap, so 25+mpg may be achievable with that...

It's currently running a stock LT1/4L60e from a '95 Caprice. I was hoping to do heads, cam, and procharger next year, but my wife got pregnant somehow. :D

Her car is the '66 wagon in my sig... with the Q-jet on top of the 454 it got 14mpg. I put a Holley on it, so I'm expecting a small drop, but replacing the powerglide with a TH350 should help around town.

My new toy gets about 5-6 MPG! But I just got it, so I haven't calculated it too much... I do know on the 40 mile ride home, it used over 1/4 tank (based on the guage)... Ouch... Then there's the quick wear on the rear tires...

'70 Chevelle, "427" stroker small block, 750 Mighty Demon (Double Pumper), all-mechanical advance distrib (locked out?)...
370 gears in the 9" housing... TH400 with 2400 stall...

This summer I plan on swapping in a distributor with vac advance, a Vacuum secondary carb, and either 3.25 (included with the car) or 3.00 gears...

I kept a log on mine while on the HRPT last year. The worst was a little less than 10mpg(lost, in traffic, in Orlando), to a best of a little better than 16(2 lane blacktop road from Perry Ga. to the SC state line). I averaged about 14.5 for the legs of the tour I ran(Orlando to home in Columbia SC).

That's for my 454/700R4/3.31 geared elky. I like to drive mine as much as I can but with gas going like it is I may have to cut back and even put the origional 10 bolt/2.73 posi back under it.

Wow. If an American were to come to Victoria, BC, Canada and purchase 1 US gallon of gas, it would cost $4.18 US dollars...

That's for regular.

1.225$/litre (regular)
3.785litre/usgal
1.11cdn/usd

Premium would be around $4.69

Honestly, I have driven my procharged 502 20 miles in the last year and have used over 40 gallons of gas........do the math. Absolutely absurd. However, if I step on the pedal, the car scares everything and everybody off the road, so I guess that's a positive.

I built a 496 '72 elco that I sold and it got 2 mpg. Sorry that I sold it, but the owner got a lot of fun out of it!!!

no frills, might get 12 maybe 14 mpg if I go very easy on it.

* The '69: Two years ago I got 9.11 mpg driving ~ 55 - 60 mph from Huntsville to Goodletsville ... all interstate. So, I figure that's my best-case. ...and the only time I ever checked. Must be awful around town :)

* The '68: I've never checked ... but suspect I'm getting ~ 14 or so. I'll be driving from several hundred miles this weekend to the Peach State Show; maybe a good time to check it :)

It doesn't have to be... see my earlier post, 22mpg isn't too shabby for an old car that runs 13s.

Last time I drove it enough to actually check the mileage when I was in high school it was 12.5 mpg in town in my old 71. Now that same engine and trans are in my 68, and it weighs about 200 lbs less...

355, crane cam, Dart Sportsman II heads, 10.5:1, 700cfm DP, 3.55 open 12 bolt.

I can only imagine what it will be when I get done with the LSx style/T56 swap. :D

I don't ever want to know and I certainly don't want my wife to know. I told here the new Bb will be getting better mileage since it is more "efficient". For reference my 36' 24,000 rv gets 7 mpg with a (hate to say it) Ford V10. It's only 320 HP but it's hard to fathom the gap in economy.

ss427rick where are you from at 5.00 dollars a gallon

I live near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Premium at $1.17 per litre. Convert litres to Imperial gallon by multiplying by 4.54. $1.17 times 4.54= $5.31. Of course a U.S gallon is slightly smaller than an Imp. gallon, but you get the idea. Gas just jumped up again today. The part that really p*****s you off is the fact that Alberta and Saskatchewan probably have more crude oil than most places on the planet but this does nothing to alleviate the ridiculous prices. The problem with our country is the insane amount of tax we pay on gas and everything else.

Just an old used 350. ;) (from a wrecked 21,000-mile '95 Caprice MN State Patrol car)

http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/medium/LT1.JPG

LT1/4L60e, completely stock except for headers, exhaust, programming (for 87 octane) and 10" 3000rpm converter with lock-up. The rear had 3.08s (soon to be 4.10s to see if I can get in the high 12s on slicks without touching the engine)

On 255/60/15 BFG Radial T/As I managed a 60' of 1.974, 1/8-mile was 8.766, and 1/4-mile was 13.827 @ 96.61mph in my 3600lb '69 Malibu. I had to leave the line like grandma to get it to hook, so slicks should have gotten me into the 13.5-13.6 range.

A better tune (actual dyno-testing rather than mail-order tune) should have produced ~24mpg, but I could only achieve 22 averaging 65mph. Changing to a 160 T-stat, and programming for 92 octane will give me about 20 more horsepower combined with the 4.10s I'm putting in should get me into the 12.9s this year on slicks while still getting 18-19mpg driving it to the track.

This gas mileage is a shame! You guys need some fuel management horribly. The Lsx platform only pulls such good MPG because of active fuel management for cruising.

I came from the Series II 3.8 platform prior to buying my 65 and man folks could tune their cars for 400 HP ( and there was no lack of torque in the supercharged L67 or the aftermarket turbo applications) and get 30 MPG highway.

Theres no replacement for displacement when your looking for that muscle rumble and gobs of torque but when it comes to power AND fuel economy my heart will forever be with the F/I v6.

Oh, and remember, those 3/4 speeds aren't helping! Those F-body and Corvette Lsx have 6 speeds! Thats the route I'm going when my budget supports it.

'70 SS LS5, M-22, 3.31's, 11:1. Gets 10 at best on the highway now and probably around 6 or 7 in town. From what my dad has said back when you could get the 100 octane leaded stuff at the pumps it would run 14 in town and 15 or 16 on the highway.

But like several people have said with these cars its not about gas mileage its about having fun. :hurray:  :beers:   :D :) But I don't get on it because its not my car. But with these cars even if you aren't running the crap out of them they are still fun to drive. I did have it going about 60 once going down a city street, but the speed limit was 40 anyway. Shifted into 3rd at about 35 and just tapped the gas a little bit and ran it up to about 60 at around 4500 rpm. Dropped it into 4th and let off it. Other than that I haven't done much with it.

In my own car I did go almost 100 though when it went down to 35. Which was stupid but it wasn't in town and I was by myself. But that was in a '97 Chrysler Sebring with a 6 cylinder and automatic.
