...does a fuel tank on a 1971 model Chevelle hold?

I'm thinking 15, not 100% sure, so i thought I'd ask.

Thanks.

That seems like a lot. When my tank shows empty on my 72, I can usually only pump a little over 12 gallons in. My gauge must be really off then.

I get 15 gallons when I go empty. I figure the safety factor means there is another gallon or 2 so you dont die right on empty. Then I figure there is a gallon you probably never touch. I assumed it was a 17 gallon tank, so maybe 18 isnt that far off. Plus the pumps shut you off prematurely so you dont spill.

I run out of gas when the guage shows just under a quarter tank. So I feel up when it touches a quarter tank, have never gotten more than 13 gallons in. I'm sure I'm filling up much sooner than I should, but ran out one time on the freeway and thats enough to make you get nervous when the guage is at 1/4

I'm pretty positive it's 20 gallons.

the replacement tanks like the GM34B etc. are 20 gallons, the factory tank is 18.

I wish my 1971 had a 5 gallon tank. Then it would not cost so much to fill up. HA HA

Hmmm, the 71 spec sheets I have says:
All models except S/Wgns....19 (approximately)
Station Wagons....18 (approximately)

You't think they'd print better specs than 'approximately'. :secret:

So maybe you get the extra half gallon filling her all the way up the neck, and they round up. Takes care of the approximately Dale :D

I just replaced the tank in my '68 El Camino with a '71 model and with 3 gallons put in to get me to the gas station and 17 gallons there to fill it up, can put the capacity on my setup right about 20 gallons

I think a big part of the capacity is the tank venting setup and how much air space is reserved at the top of the tank.
