: How would you rank Chevelle years in terms of desireability?

I'm not talking specifically for an SS, or a vert, just in general the year as far as desire and price.

I would rank them as follows

1. 67 & 70
2. 66 & 69
3. 71 & 68
4. 64,65 & 72

Tough to pin point each year down, and some seem to be about the same, that is why I lumped some years together. I'm curious on everyone elses thoughts. I would have put 71 first since that is what I own, but I wanted to be objective.

NOTE: This is my ranking for desirability, not which ones I like most. My order would be different than this. :beers:

we are pretty much in agreement. Obviously everyone has their favorite year so it may be different.

Shoot.... I have only a '65..... bummer.

Ok, I would start with the '65, then '66 and then up to '70, '72 and '71.

The others will just have to fight it out in the trenches.

Are you guys talking your opinions instead of desirability? I think he meant what is most desirable on the market, not desirable to you. 65's in general are no where close to 70's value/desirability, maybe the Z15 or is it 16?. Maybe I read it wrong...

yeah, i did mean market wise, obviously owning a 71 SS, I would put the 71's first then on down the line, but in general the two years that create the most excitement, ie; desireable and higher prices are the 70's and 67's hands down in my book, and both of those years are real close. i've seen a rusty 70 Malibu bring 7 grand, and it was a 307 car, just because some guy wanted to make an SS454 clone. A 68 rusty Malibu would never sniff 7 grand in that shape

Ok... my feelings are hurt!

Ok.... I'm over it now!

Personally, I like 'em all. What ya all realize is the obvious: We have every one well represented here, some are works in progress, some are fully restored - original, some are hot rods. One can point out that certain models will garner huge amounts of money (Z16) while another will not (4 door post)... regardless, all of them are hard to find and any one of them fixed up will increase in the FUN value.

Ditto, I'd take a very well done 67 over a piece of junk 70 and I love 70's, but that's just my personal preference. Should my personal taste matter to anyone else, no. The question is actually foolish when you really think about it, we're all supposed to be one big happy Chevelle family.

1965's in general are no where close to 1970's value/desirability, maybe the Z15 or is it 16?...
As far as, collector's desirability, the high-horsepower big block convertibles, low production number cars,
SS big block cars, SS small block convertibles cars, then small block SS hardtop/post cars in general ........
then non-SS convertibles/ hardtop/ post cars...........not necessarily in that exact order ...

The 1969 model COPO's, 1965 model Z16/SS396, 1970 model Z15-LS6/SS454, the Z25-L78/SS396,
"convertible Chevelle SS's", are probably, the most desirable on the market, then, SS 2dr hardtops..

Then probably the Z15-LS5/SS454, Z25-L34/L35/SS396SS "convertible Chevelle's", then the SS 2dr hardtops ...... and, post coupes ....

Then the non-SS convertibles, the, 2dr hardtop/post coupes ... I'm sure I left something, out........

This is my "personal preference" ...... memories from, my "gas pumping days" .................... Don.
1. 70 SS454 / SS396
2. 71 SS454 / SS396 / SS
3. 66 SS396
4. 69 COPO / SS396
5. 72 SS454 / SS

Don't worry about it... I doubt that anyone got their feathers ruffled. There are alot of people that enter this site and many new people join who do not have the 'time' in as members so there will always be repeat questions. If I see something that I have seen before, I'll generally just pass it by.

Although the 1970 has become the most popular as of late, if you were to ask this same question 10 years ago, I think you'd find a completely different opinion. I think the popularity of the 70 model is infatuated by the shear existence of one option. LS6. If a 69 and a 70 were siilarly appointed with a 307, I'd have the 69 first. In my eyes, a 70 with a 307 is a grandmas car. Yes, so is a 69, but it has so much more character. In other words, the 70 looks like a big boxy boat to me. The only thing that makes them look good to me is when they have the SS emblems and cowl induction hood. The stripes help tremendously. A 69, on the other hand, looks fantastic in any form.

I'm very sure you didn't mean to offend anyone here but it's almost impossible to guage market prices by a particular year. There are too many variables with each and every car. There are some Chevelles with really low production numbers that are rust buckets and will command 30-40-50K before a resto. Yet there are other cars, say a 69 well done convertible with the right colors worth 65K. I guess the point I'm trying to make here is that each car will pretty much stand on it's own and let the market dictate what it's worth. Market price is all what the next guy is willing to pay for whatever your selling. Just my .02

all i know is the first car i had was a 66 velle ss 396 4spd 12 bolt, second car was same, third was 65 396 4spd 12 bolt clone. fourth was red on red 70 396 oops 402 turbo 400 and 12 bolt, fifth and final code 53 paint 70 velle LS6 M22 12 bolt which is the most awesome car in the world, and i hope that i have the only camaro gold LS6 ever made. oh and my other is a 70z bigblock 4spd hence my name. my list is personally my favorite and i hope you'all's are the same to you. but they are still just possessions. my two kids are really what matters to me. i have lived alot in 43 years and plan on a couple more. i hope that we all get our cars done someday so we can get together and talk crap. and show battle scars.:beers:

Have you ever noticed that the "most popular" according to market always seem to also have the most for sale (look at the 67 and 70 section here on TC and on Ebay)? This seems to also follow in the Camaro market as there are always a bunch of 69s (allegedly most popular Camaro) for sale.

Now is it because folks buy what is popular and then realize it isn't what they like or is it greedy folks just trying to cash in? :D

I think you've got the answer right there.

I think 70's would be number 1 excluding the COPO's and other "special" cars.

I wish 69's were #2 BUT 66's would hold the #2 spot wouldn't they?

But it's not just the model year that decides the desireability.

My guess is, most car guys/Chevelle guys have thick enough skin to deal with this topic. I know I do. I couldn't care less why someone would but a certain year Chevelle at the bottom of their list, and I'm sure most others feel the same way. This subject has been done to death. I disagree...
1970 first, sure, and 69 high up on the list (probably above either 66 or 67 in value, IF documented)... But I think '66's tend to be a little higher priced/value than '67s... And both 66 and 67's are higher than 1968s... '68s might even be lower priced than '71s...

To say that the '70 in general is the most valuable is crazy. Maybe the big block '70, but other than that, there is nothing special about it over any other. If you check the market,I think you will find '69's fetching the highest. I agree that most of it is driven by greed. A few people have mentioned that this post seemed to be aimed at making a few select people feel like they have the 1969 Camaro of the Chevelle world. I had a '69 Camaro and sold it because they are way too popular.
Popularity is driven by peoples lack of imagination and originality. If you are concerned with how much your car is worth, go get some shoe polish and write an appraised value on the window to make yourself feel better-it serves the same purpose.

I don't agree with that. So does that mean that my liking of a '70 SS Cranberry Red with Black Stripes and a black bucket interior. Does that mean I am not creative?

I could care less what 10,000 other people like. I like what I like and that is all there is to it. It wouldn't matter if the most desireable was that sea mist color with white stripes. My favorite would still be the red and black. Thats just what I personally like.

And why would you sell your '69 just because it was popular?

Im not trying to sound like an ass or anything. I just disagree with what you are saying.

I mean the general populace. Not trying to sound like a jerk either, but it gets real frustrating when some of us who don't make a million dollars a year do it for the pure love of it while posures screw up the market with ridiculous Barrett Jackson prices. As far as the '69 Camaro is concerned, I had a subscription to 6 Hot Rod "type" magazines. It gets real old when the majority of articles and episodes of weekend car shows are predominantly about 1969 Camaros. I get sick of it. I would much rather see something about a 1975 Chevelle or 1980 Malibu or even a 1965 Fairlane(and I'm a diehard Chevy guy) over ANOTHER '69 Camaro project any day.

i think this thread would have been better as a pole so we would be able to see the results better but my choice is

1st place---66, 67, 70
2nd--------68, 69
third -------64, 65
4th----------71, 72, 73

but depending on my mood, any one can be moved up to 1st place

Shoot.... I have only a '65..... bummer.

Ok, I would start with the '65, then '66 and then up to '70, '72 and '71.

The others will just have to fight it out in the trenches.

NOTE: This is my ranking for desirability, not which ones I like most. My order would be different than this. :beers:

I'm totally ignoring the "value" here. When I think of "expensive" chevelle it is a 70. Thats why I'm glad I love the 71 and 72s. I think it has alot to do with how old you are. Being younger I enjoy the 71 and 72 sporty looking bumper with the vette looking lights. I simply love it. I do like the "mean" looking front ends of the 70s and earlier. I've never really enjoyed the 60's style, but if I grew up at that time peorid I could see how someone would love "their" old car. The major changes to the chevelle over a period of ten years is very interesting and it adds alot of flavor to all of our cars.
To each his own. You can hate my 71, but I love her and thats all that really matters to me.

randy,
well put. nobody will change anyone's mind here. like you, i'm glad i like the '68's, they are middle of the road as far as value, but if my '68 SS conv 4 speed was the same thing only a '70 it would be out of my price range.

hey glenn amen to that:beers: cant beat them 68s have a 68 300 Deluxe myself:thumbsup: i hate 70s you know you would think 68s would be more valuable cause they were the last year to tell if its a real SS without a buildsheet cause i dont think they came with one thats at least what i heard, but 68s are pretty much a 69 and 69s are bringing more money than 68s but still its the last year you can tell if it was a real SS or not with the 138 vin!!!:hurray:
