The Dynomax seem to be a big hit on this site. I used them once on my 71 big block and they fit perfect. I later gave them to a friend for his 69 and they fit his car great too. I'm sure if you do a search you find everything you ever wanted to know about which are the best headers. This question has been asked before. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Whatever brand you get, make sure they have a thick head flange so you won't get leaks. I have Hedman Elites and am VERY happy with them.

Are there any other brands besides Dynomax? What p/n for the Dynomax?

Junkyard,
Dynomax is the cheapest you'll find on summit, that is, if you don't mind buying them under the Summit brand name. And of course, if you're looking for painted headers, not coated.

Don't take my word for this, wait for a Big Block guy to chime in, but the pair of headers I got from Summit for my bro's Small Block Nova, I ordered them under the Summit brand name and they arrived in a Dynomax box with Dynomax instruction sheet.

The part number for a BB Chevelle is SUM-G9010. They show up as an 86 dollar part.

Just installed Hedman Elites on my '70 BB - fit great, look great, work great, all at a very reasonable cost ($305.98 from Summit).

We put 1 5/8 jet coated long tube hedmans on our 406. Both had to go in from the bottom, pretty close to the a-arms and steering rod. But they look great and fit great.

Does Hooker make a set that fits well? I'm guessing for a bbc I'll need 1 7/8 ones at a minimum.

You want a 1 3/4 header for a BB especially on the smaller BB's like the 396/402.

Also, w/ dynomax, do they have thick head flanges like the hedmans?

I use Hooker Comps on both my big and small block combos. The small block set fits great with no modifications. The set for my big block requires a small dimple where the brake distribution block mounts to the frame rail. I didn't dimple mine but it barely touches an area about an eighth of an ince. I'll dimple them when another BBC goes in though. They look and fit well and tuck nicely under the car.

We got a set of coated Patriot headers (appear to be Hedman knock-offs) for our 1969 sbc. Nice, thick flange. Problem: The #5 exhaust contacts the steering shaft.

Contacted Pertronix (the company that owns Patriot, used to be Thunderbird.) After some arguing they finally agreed to modify a driver's side header. Told them the #5 exhaust just needed to be flattened by a small amount (heat it with a torch, put a piece of thick angle iron or other flat stock on the tube and smack it with a hammer).

Got call about two weeks later that modified header was available. Went and picked it up. It looked like someone in a bad mood, with an anger management problem, took a hammer to the #5 tube and beat the snot out of it. Looks like hell.

Contacted Pertronix a week ago to advise I wasn't happy with the work that was done and sent photos. Still waiting to hear.

Sorry for the long rant.

I haven't heard of any brand that don't have to be installed from the bottom. Dynomax aren't the only good ones but mine went in easy and have great clearance every where. Even with angle plugs.

I got a question about those summit headers. I bought a set in december they say it fits 70-81 big block camaro and will fit 72 chevelle with big block. the specs says it won't clear the column shifter on the chevelle. has anybody found this to be true? I just can't decide which car to install my big block in, and my el co is a column shift. Jim

What's your take on the Hedman street headers p/n HED-68190? They appear to have thicker flanges and thicker tube gauge as compared to the Summit ones. Also I'm wanting a set that will allow my engine to breathe.
