: hernias anyone ?
grovey Apr 28th, 07, 7:39 AM just got out of the hospital last night. i woke up friday morning with belly pains. i took off work thinking it was just something i ate or ? by 2:00 pm i was really hurting. when my wife got home from work i was down! went to the hospital and after some xrays, and a cat scan i was pumped full of morphine and sent to emergency surgery. they said it had to be done as my inards were pressing thru the tear and were dieing. anyhow after numerous shots of morphine and demeral they got me fixed up. anyone else been thru this ? i feel like i've been gut shot with a 12 gauge. 6 weeks down time, and i just thought i ate something bad. geez

Bill Rose Apr 28th, 07, 9:16 AM I was born with a hernia. It wasn't an emergency. The doc told my parents, it should be fixed before I started school. Can't remember too much about it, but hernia surgery on a 4 year old can't be fun:sad:
grovey Apr 28th, 07, 9:19 AM it was quite a shocker to me. the pain i had was tremendous when i went to the emergency room. i knew i was in bad shape when a morphine shot only dulled the pain. i never expected to be on a operating table. let alone rushed to the operating room. right now it feels like a big cough or sudden movement could tear me in half. bummer deal to say the least.

I too was born with one! Had to have surgery when I was about 18 months old.
Don't remember any of it and that's the best way to have a surgery!!
va72mlibu Apr 28th, 07, 10:44 AM I just had an umbilical hernia repaired two weeks ago. Not fun, but not as painful as the other hernias (from what I hear). Best of luck on your recovery! No lifting for 6 weeks is a PITA!
BAD415 Apr 28th, 07, 11:31 AM Sufferd from a double hernia years ago. Nothing like that "achey kicked in the nuts" feeling. Fixed through surgery. Doctor said I could have had them for years, and never had any trouble.
PaPa Johns 77 Apr 28th, 07, 11:49 AM Had a co-worker put off going to the Dr for belly pain until one day he couldn't even roll himself out from under the car he was working on. He lost almost 3ft of small intestine and was in the hospital for 8 weeks getting a life threatening infection cleared up. He was out of work for 5 months all because of a hernia! They are a serious matter for sure.
My wife has had two umbilical hernias the first from picking up two babies at a time (twins). The second was a re-ocurance of the same one. They used a mesh to repair it the second time.
Trooper Apr 28th, 07, 12:09 PM Here's the rule guys. If you have to hold your breath to lift it, it's too heavy. get assistance.

LeoP Apr 28th, 07, 7:07 PM Double hernia surgery in 98, back to work in 6 weeks on light duty.
va72mlibu Apr 28th, 07, 10:47 PM They used a mesh to repair it the second time.
I got the mesh too. No more guts pokin' out!
novaderrik Apr 28th, 07, 11:11 PM hernias anyone ?
no thanks. i can do without.
Junkyard Dawg Apr 29th, 07, 10:55 AM Never have had one but damn i can't imagine how you guys get them....
Did have a guy tell me I'd get one if I kept pushing a 5700 lb aircraft diesel generator cart around too much.
Freddy Mercado Apr 29th, 07, 8:26 PM They now do hernia repair orthoscopically, throught the belly botton. Do not do it the conventional way. That is a painful operation. Hurts and you will be out of action for a while. I had it done and was down and out for six weeks. Unbelievable pain.
smittyocat Apr 29th, 07, 9:27 PM Yeah I had one when I was 2 months old afterwards I coulnt walk for a year.
:)
Hughski Apr 30th, 07, 12:14 AM I've had 4. In '96, I had to have both inguinal (sp?) rings closed up. They are the rings that our (men) tubes go through. I guess mine were about 3/4" and they are only supposed to be about 1/4". My surgeon didn't believe in using the mesh...said it caused problems. After the surgery, I was wondering if he had used a butter knife due to the bruising and the pain. Its usually an outpatient surgery, but they kept me overnight due to the pain and swelling. I could barely walk. The next year I had a reoccurance on the left side. This surgeon was 100% better as I could get up and walk around the same day with little discomfort and only took painkillers at night as they were not needed during the day. HE used MESH. Last year I started getting that familiar pain again, only this time its on the right unmeshed side. Another #*&$% hernia. Had the surgery in October. Way better than the first, but not as comfortable as the second. This surgeon used mesh, too. And staples to close up the cut which caused an infection as they couldn't be taken out after the first week. I had to wait through the weekend and something got down under one of the staples. Now there is some extra scar tissue there and it gives me some tweeks now and then. That should go away within a year according to the surgeon. Now I have balance as the scars match on both sides like this: > < .:D
Advise: If you are having groin pains, GET CHECKED OUT! You CAN die from a hernia if its left long enough and is a certain type (intestine pops through, twists and goes septic). Only go with a surgeon that will use mesh and ask about using internal stitches to close up the wound. Ask about using peroxide to keep the area clean the first week after surgery (this probably would have prevented my infection...maybe). Just going by my bad experiences here...not a doctor;) .
I'll take a hernia op any day over the surgery I had to fix a collapsed lung, though. Ended up with a 10" scar with that go-round.
steve58 Apr 30th, 07, 7:10 AM I wonder how you can be born with a hernia?
PaPa Johns 77 Apr 30th, 07, 10:23 AM It sometimes happens during the birthing process. It also can be just a matter of being an underdeveloped paratineal that allowed the small bowl to protrude usually around the umbilical.:)
