I put the new 454 up on the hoist tonight. The plan was to bolt on the clutch and bell-housing, then drop in the motor. As I crank the bolts with a torque wrench into the flywheel to bolt on the pressure plate a damn bolt breaks off. I am so ticked off. Is there a good way to get the bolt out or do I need to buy a new flywheel?

That bolt can be drilled out, that shouldn't be a problem. Any machine shop ot welding shop can get it out for you if you're not comfortable doing the job. What was the torque spec on that bolt?

Or you could set a nut over top of it and mig weld it to the bolt. I've used up to four or five nuts on a bolt, but it will get it out. Put the tip of your mig, I use a 110, flush on top of the nut, high voltage setting, about 50 percent wire feed.

Let it cool, then try turning it back and forth, a little at a time, don't get in a hurry, back and forth, it will come out.

I had the wrench set at 35 lbs. but I did crank a little past the click. The bolts were from AMK. This really sucks

Not to worry...broken bolts are part of the "fun" of an old car project. ;)
As mentioned, it can be easily removed. If you're not comfortable with doing it, any local machine shop could.
You should actually feel fortunate....it should NOT have broken at 35 lbs. :( Must have been flawed.

Lucky it happened now, and not when you were out on the road!

True better now than on the road. I think I'm going to try to find a machine shop today. I'm afraid I'll end up messing up the threads if I do it. How do you drill a bolt out? Do those Super outs work?

I hope you dump the rest of the bolts and get ARP flywheel bolts
Theres always the old fashion tryed and true way, center punch the broken end, use a very good drill bit, drill a hole then use an easy out. But if you screw that up it will be much harder for a shop to remove.

Well I couldn't wait, so I tried a set of Sears screw extractors that I got for a birthday present. Worked like a charm. Back in business:hurray:

I agree, bolts are a safety item especially on a clutch. Spend a few bucks and have peace of mind.
