Hey guys,
My uncle knows a guy that has a Deluxe Crate 502 for sale. I guess he picked it up last fall for $7200. Cheapest I could find one around here was around $7700 w/o tax. The engine is still in the crate and has never been fired. He is asking $7600 and since he works for a chevy dealership states that he can get me a one year warranty. What do you guys think?

How about a Shaffiroff 540 shortblock for ~4500.00 and get some alum heads of your choice for 2200.00. You need a couple of extra bucks to finish it off but you'll probably be about 150HP ahead.

Just a thought.

Id like to stay in the 500-550 range right now......if I need more power ill do a procharger down the road..........

We'll if that's the case, the 502 will do ya just fine.

Problem is, you need to run an electric pump fuel pump, change out the pan and pickup and get one that fits a Chevelle, so there is some hidden costs.

You can just build up a 454 and hit 500HP w/o breaking a sweat or that bank.

Bang for the buck I thought this sounded like a good deal, and I believe that the 502 is a great package. As far as the competitors, there is some great stuff out there but I am looking for a pump gas crate around 500-550 HP. I understand that the other motors put out anywhere from 100-200 more horse for a couple more grand but honestly, I am sick of breaking things. As far as electric fuel pump, have that already (the old setup was using both electric and mechanical), and I know about the oil pan. IT seems as if there are a lot of anti-502 people on here.

Not anti-502, I have its little cousin in my car now (454HO w/ZZ502 heads).

I had to pull it apart BTW at 3000miles and rehone/re-ring for a massive oil consumption issue.

I just feel for that kind money you could really build something awesome. But the plug-and-play nature of the 502 is nice.

what did you decide on? I'm looking at a crate 502...about $7600, but I think the dealer told me it comes with a 2 yr warranty from GM. let me know if you got it and what you think of it...or

if you do a 502 short block and a edelbrock power package, they say it will pull around 610 hp, heads cam and their intake, I wish I would of done that, I did not see the ad till I already started my build on the motor. it still not done anybody know were to get more time or freeze it for a couple hours?

Seems like everyone can build you a more powerful engine for less than what a GMPP can do.

How did that warranty get extended????

I just talked to someone at GM powertrain contact center with the issues
of oil burning and tailpipe saturation with my 454
2,500
4-5 qts oil in the last 1500

After leaving my cell number, home number, and address, I have yet to hear back from them.

I will be back home tomorrow night, so I guess I will have to call again

(see post GMPP 454 sucking oil)

If they make no attempt to please me I will post their #on this site for all the others that have had issues with these motors.

If you have an engine done from a builder, make sure it some as complete as the GM 502. Things like a starter, plugs/wires, etc can add up quickly.

Oil pan kit for 502 into Chevelle is #12495360. It's a 4qt, comes with 4 main cap bolts, screen, tube, stick, and gasket.

Ah hah

I misunderstood.

So apparantly there have been some changes-----Think perhaps that they are taking the time to build these things CORRECTLY now????
