How much horsepower, torqe, and RPM is a 454 good for with a cast crank, 2 bolt main and stock rods?

Bear,

I don't have the exact answer but can offer an opinion.

For your normally aspirated motor I would say if you stick to 6500 rpms you should be fine. I would not recommend going over 7000. Don't think your engine combo needs to go over 6500 anyway. 6500 - 7000 is probably in the grey area where you may start to have problems.

As far as hp and torque, for normally aspirated a non issue, but if you are using power adders such as lots of nitrous and turbo boost would recommend a properly built short block with good components.

Like I say, the station wagon motors are good to 6500 if your valve train will support that rpm level.

Something like 600+ hp a quarter mile at a time up to like 6500 rpm..

Suckers are stout, imho!!

Add a good forged rotating assembly and what is it 8 to 900 hp at say 7500 rpm......

Thanks guys. My engine is in my sig with 781 heads and a hydralic cam. I want to go with some aluminum heads and a solid roller cam. I have talked to a few guys around here that are telling me not with the 2 bolt main, cast crank and stock rods. I have upgraded my driveline this winter to prep the car for more power. I installed a rebuilt race preped TH400 with a brake and a TCI 4900 stall converter, a chromemolly drive shaft, went to a 4.30 gear and a Strange spool with Strange axles. I have also done some suspension work and gone with 2" taller tires (30" x 12.5" ET street radials). So I don't know what to do, Build up the engine I have or pull this engine, sell it and build myself an engine, or sell this engine and mabey buy myself a Shafiroff crate engine  .

Hey Sandy, see you in 13 days at the Test and Tune. I am looking forward to seeing your new ride
Cheers

Add a 2-bolt main stud kit to it for some added insurance if you feel uneasy using a 2-bolt block..

I did in my 496.

Bear,

Enjoy the summer race season with your new setup!

I agree with the local guys that it is not worth spending much on your present motor. I am in the same situation with a "good station wagon motor" with a solid roller cam to run this summer. I do not think it is worth spending any money on it. It is what it is, basic cheap economical moderate pump gas power. Sell it to somebody that wants power for their "hot" street car.

Better to sell it and build a real strong shortblock to put some aluminum heads on for next year. Keep in mind that the right combination of parts: particularly the cam, heads and pistons is the key. Check the price of race gas before you go to high compression.

Crate motors are convenient, but can be a nightmare as you can read from some posts on this forum. We have some pretty good engine builders and machinists here locally that I trust.

An option is to go with the big cubes, John ran 10.3 at Calgary with a pump gas 540 in his 67 Camaro. That should be pretty close to 10.1 at your location.
