: Just throwing this out there.....Quarter Panel replacement

Figured my chances are about -100%, but I figured what the hay.. Anyhow feel like replacing the rear quarter panels on my 69SS, the vent holes just keep getting bigger. By the time I have the money to actually get a shop to cut them out and replace them, I will be able to skip the cutting them out part. I'm afraid to take the wheel well trim off, because I know I will lose a good chunk of the quarter.. The paint it the only thing holding it together. LOL... so hey, if you have the tools and feel like working on a 69 just out of the kindness of your heart..... let me know,

Actually, I expect more, but don't think it will be too bad. The car is a California Car except for the past 10 years or so. When it was in California it had been undercoated...(and it is real thick too) when I was vacuming the car out the other day, I pulled up a good portion of the carpet, theres a lot of blue, but thats about it... looked real solid. I however did notice one spot underneeth the rear quarter that I was tapping with a hammer and it went threw. IT will need some work, but beyond the quarters there is little else. (thats the positive side of my brain working) The other side of my brain thinks I am on crack and that this car will never been without rust bubbles and vent holes in the quarters.....

You said it right there.... perfect. You left out...the welder as well.. guess that would have put the low prices out of whack.

So no offers then?

Geez.. like I said in another thread, we need to do a monthly help the TC member out drive. If you figure, every member drops $1.00 in a bucket once a month, that works out to several thousands. Each month one lucky winner gets that much in needed work. If it caught on, then we could go, $2, or $5 a month and help more than one member. After a couple year a good chunk of the members with cars taht needed major body work, will be ahead of the game.

Hey, right after finishing off that car, you all can come up to Canada and help finish my '65 Impala. Time for final filling and block sanding. I'm feeling lazy.

In addition to beer and pizza, I'll throw in some of the world's best walleye, lake trout, and northern pike fishing.

I doubt you will be coming here, but here are some supplies you'll need no matter who does it.

cut off wheel, metal screws, 60 or 80grit sand paper for da, weld through primer, some epoxy to spray it when done. I think that should about cover it, but I probably forgot something. Ohhh.. and you'll likely need trunk drop offs and/or inner/outer wheelhouses but you can check really well and should know before you get the quarter off.

I could probably let you use my cut off wheels, da paper, and self tapping screws, but everyone isn't as nice as me :D

You might be suprised., but are probably correct. I drove the Chevelle from Springfield, IL to Lawton, OK a couple years back and that was a long drive. Drive to St. Louis and Chicago, Peoria all the time. Why do you think I have well over 300k on this car. :) New motor is the way though.....

I jokingly told the wife I was going to Ohio to get my quarters fixed, etc.. etc... She was all for it. :)

Alright.. think we could get both sides done in a weekend? I wouldn't be good for much other than labor... or if you need a software application wrote. I have a MS is Computer Science, and a Curbside degree in Cars. I can do a lot, just don't have any tools or know how.

Now don't be pulling my leg here..... you are being serious I hope?

hmott
Apr 27th, 07, 1:05 PM
Thats funny I write applications for a living too... I was being serious. I can't be 100% sure we can get both sides done in a weekend. If Scott comes down we'd be better off I think. I'm only 1/2 done with the quarter on my own car, and its my first. I have all the tools, and I weld, so I'm not worried about getting mine done. BUT, I've never had to get any of my work done in a short time frame. Remember you get what you pay for, the good part is you would be there helping, so you'd know exactly what happened. I don't think I'm going to flange mine, but I have the tool so we could go that route if needed.

Let me make sure all is clear before you decided to make that drive.. because I don't mind at all if you come down, and your more than welcome.

Assume you get;
my garage space (its about a 4 car garage 2 bays about 2 cars long) but with all the crap in it you'd only have a 1 actual bay to use, and my chevelle is on the other side.
I have a 7hp 60gallon compressor, pretty much all the air tools you'll need.
I have a 120 lincoln mig welder with gas and solid .035 wire,
an assortment of normal shop tools, an angle grinder.
I have a decent hvlp gun (astro 1.4 tip) for the epoxy

You'll get my help, but don't expect that I'll do all the work. Actually I would prefer you assume you'll do the work and I'll just be your backup and help you. I've not even completely finished the quarters on my car, but I'm happy to help you do yours. I'll probably have one side finished by the time you make it down. I can weld, but not well enough you won't have to do some grinding and use some filler before paint. I'm not trying to scare you off, just want to make sure you know what your getting into. You won't be coming to a pro shop where I can just quickly do all the work for you. Basically you'll get a fully stocked garage with another hobbiest to help you. Because I work in IT, like you do, I don't have any "car" friends. I'm happy to have one even just for a weekend, my wife doesn't enjoy me talking about my latest conquest in the garage.. at all :D

Harlan, I wouldn't flange that quater on.
Butt weld it.
Tiny tacks no longer than 1/4 inch.
mover around alot
keep the panel cool.
If you guys let me know what weekend, I could possibly help out.
I'm on vacation My 14 - labor day, but I'm headed out west.
My first time out there and I want to see what all the hub bub is about. ;)

Thats my plan, but I know some of the guys do use the flange tool, so I mentioned I have one.

Awesome things look like they are comming together.. Sounds like were putting together a quarter panel party.....I'll have to go poke around the metal and see if anything makes its way threw the other side so that I know all the metal I need to purchase. I am assuming I can get away with just using a 70% skin or something like that. The rust is just around the wheel well lip and a bit around the back bottom edge of the panel where it tucks under the car.

My only concern is whether everything could be Removed and replaced in a weekend.

Harlan, I haven't welded anything in years, and that was just with an acetelyne(sp?) torch and brazing rod. With help from others that may show it should go well. I don't know. It is promissing and I appreciate your generosity.

Don't get me wrong, I'll help. I'll weld if you want, I'll cut out if you want. I just don't want to be responsible if your unhappy with the way it comes out. I want it to be YOUR project, in my garage with my helping hand. Not my project with your helping hand. I know it seems trivial, but I don't want to you make the drive, and then be unhappy to find out I'm a shade-tree welder that hasn't even finished his own quarters yet. And that is what you will find, I love working on my car, and its not ever going to be a 1000 pt resto. I just would feel horrible if you wanted/expected that and its not what you get. I think it would be great to have a few guys over and help you put on the quarters. But I don't want it to be on my shoulders if things don't work out, not that I think they won't. I image a couple of guys with a love for the cars and the tools shouldn't have a problem, but I hope you see where I'm coming from.

I'll also need a good deal of notice, and probably some flexibilty on the weekend you want to do it. I have kids, 3 of them, currently in 4 different sports. That leaves me very little for weekend time right now. As soon as school is out that should change, but you'll need to work with me on the weekend, I'm not always available on short notice.

I totally understand.. I hold down 1 full time and two part time jobs and have 3 kids as well. Not to mention that I am also still working on finishing my Master's Thesis so it will be official. So I have little time as well. For instance I have to be in at work tommorow morning at 6am, we have to shut down the data center, and the electrictions are upgrading out transformer. Once they are done we get to turn everything back on and see how many drives we lost.. fun fun.

I wasn't thinking it would be to quick either, i still needs the parts and such. I do believe if we get enough help(especially experienced help) we could get your quarters finished as well.

I'm willing to trade services as well... anyone in need of a Application with a Database back end... or a DR Plan? :)

When I start gathering parts I will be in touch and see if we cannot ressurect this thread and get something worked out for both of us......

Thanks Again,

Big D
