Don't know if this has been posted or even if this is true but I now hear Shell's rotella oil no longer has the zinc in it that some of you believe. Discussion here:

Interesting read...the post that caught my eye was mention of Rotella-T in extended use causing excessive blow-by. Never heard this before - anyone else heard this? I know a lot of folks (me included) run Rotella-T without problems.

I used Brad Penn for my last FT break-in with no problems, but it is not exactly the cheapest choice out there. (Still cheaper than wiping a cam, though).

i think they had to get rid of the Zinc and what not in order to get the "SM" rating so they could keep the eco nazis happy.
i believe that the Delo i've looked at while browsing at Wal Mart also has the SM rating, as well. so much for readily available "good" oil..
altho, i did see some 10w-40 4 wheeler oil with an SF rating a couple of weeks ago that was right around $2 a quart.

Our chevron jobber warehouse has the old delo by the pallet here at 60 bucks a case I wonder how much to stock up.

if this is true then use valvoline racing oil. it specifically says not street legal on the bottle i believe.

is the valvoline racing oil "not street legal" synthetic? or non?

This has been discussed in quite detail on TC also. There are several racing oils that still contain zinc. Im still not quite sure how you tell if a container of Rotella would contain the Zinc, I have seen it explained but I still find it confusing personally.

if it's rated "SM" on the back, it is the new blend that doesn't have the zinc in it.
i was just thinking about how a couple of years ago, everyone with any sort of knowledge on this subject said to never ever add anything like STP or EOS to anything but a fresh engine for break in- the logic being that the chemists and engineers at the oil companies know what's best- and now the prevailing advice seems to be to add a jug of something to the oil at every change if you have flat tappets.

Can anyone post the ratings (e.g., SM & SF) the oil companies used for rating oil and what it actually means?
Thanks!
