I'm replacing my M20 with a Richmond 5-speed. I've indexed the bell housing and used the clutch alingment tool provided. But, the trans is about 3/4 inch from seating to bellhousing. I checked and I have the right input shaft, clutch, pilot bearing, etc. Is there a trick to getting this installed the rest of the way?

I have always had luck with hooking up the clutch linkage and having someone push it in and pull it out, all while you are wiggling and pushing the trans in below.
When I was by myself I was able to leave the trans in, with a little gap like yours and it resting on a jack stand. Go into the car, push the clutch in and release it. Then I went below and with some more wiggling and pushing the trans slid in.
Whatever you do, do not use the bolts to pull it in! :noway:

Input shaft is likely a bit tight in the pilot bearing. PUSH! Actually dilligent wiggling.
Oh heck I assume you had someone push in the clutch pedal!

Mark,
Another thing to try is to put the yoke on the back of the trans and put it in gear. The try turning the yoke while you push the trans forward. This works a lot of times if the input shaft splines are not lined up with the cluth disc.

I recently had this happen also and in my case it was slight interference with the lakewood bellhousing bore and the front bearing retainer.
