what parts do you already have to work with? Does the block need to be bored again? how`s the crank and rods? If it just needs a ring/bearing job then you should be able to get by pretty cheap depending on what all is needed and what your expectations are. Do you have a budget in mind?

haha no all i have is the block. most of the machine work has already been done. tanked, magged, bored. just needs the hone. but i need everything else, rods pistons, crank EVERYTING.

cheapest? probably some rotating assembly from china found on ebay.

i found my rotating assembly on flatlander. heck of a deal. Mike Lewis balanced it.

i thought you were gonna do some turbo motor. definitely dont want cheap parts there...

You'll want different compression for a naturally aspirated engine versus turbo/supercharger. N/A should be around 9.5, add the huffer and you'll want to be more like 7.5 - 8:1 which will be a dog without the added charge. I'd probably go with some flat tops on a 496 (since you don't have the crank, they're the same price as are rods and pistons) and closed chamber heads which should put your compression about right for the street. Then you can swap heads to big chambers which will lower the compression to be forced induction friendly.

are you just throwing together an el cheapo motor and buying good stuff later? including a decent block?

if you hope to use some parts later, then you better buy a good forged crank and strong rods. pistons will probably be replaced anyway cause CR will change.

do you have a 4 bolt main block?

i have a callies dragonslayer crank, manley h beam rods and mahle forged pistons. i would like to think that this stuff is good to 8-900+ hp at street rpms. my block is a dart m with billet caps...

yeah cheapo motor, nothing to do with the turbo motor. im gonna use forged everyting and a after market block for that. this is just to get the car going for now.

Check ebay or racing junk for a running 454 and just drop it in. I'v seen them for 2500.00. Or less if it needs work. You should be able to get a running one for a grand that needs rebuilding. Probably cheeper than buying all new parts for yours.

i'd find some heads first, that way you can buy pistons to achieve the comp you want. i'm kinda in the same boat, i'm buying a complete stock std bore 454 this weekend, and it'll be a on the cheap build $1,000 tops in my shortblock.

My engine is testimony to that fact that you don't need to spend much on a motor.

Basic 1970 station wagon oval port 454 with a too large solid roller cam! I think they were rated around 365 hp in those days for the passenger car low performance option. 10.5 compression, two bolt main, cast crank, stock rods with good bolts, oval port heads (with larger valves) and aluminum intake, headers and lots of converter and 4.1 gears.

Runs on pump gas too.

And still enough to run 11.3/119.5 on pump gas at altitude.

check with these guys:

www.competitionproducts.com

they used to offer stock, recon connecting rods,Chinese 454 crank and hyper domed pistons for less than $500 w/bearings and they would balance for you too for extra $$$
If you don't see it on the web, call them for a free catalog

Watch out, it'll nickel and dime you to death. Gaskets, plugs, wires and the other miscellaneous stuff adds up in a hurry. Don't forget to add a good chunk for machine work, too.

Budget and big block really isnt smart. If you just want to get your car going down the road you would be better selling your current block and that will give you quite a bit of cash for used small block parts and a GM or remanufactured moto.A running used small block in someone's car can typically be had for a lot less that what it will cost you to build your BB on a budget, especially if you dont even have heads, crank and rods. This will get you down the road and moving.

Then you have something a little more efficient to drive regualrly, and then you can save your $$$$$$$$$$ for the BB motor you really want.
