: Bumperettes
mmurphy77 Apr 24th, 07, 2:10 PM My '71 did not come with the bumperettes but I really like how they look. I would like to get some for both bumpers but am concerned about proper placment/drilling/mounting/etc. Anybody have experience? I'm sorry, I know a lot of people DON'T like them - hold the hate mail. LOL
ss1970chev454 Apr 24th, 07, 2:36 PM Placement/alignment is a given. As there are holes already in the bottom of the bumper where a bolt goes thru the bumper guard and thru the bumper. The top is held by a clamp/hook that is mounted to the upper portion of the guard. This hook goes around the top bumper.
Get ready because bumper guards are not cheap. And getting a pair rechromed is also not cheap. So you better like them...alot. LOL
I have to admit. 20 years ago I hated those things and would have tossed them in trash. Now I feel differently. Their a nice addition to the front of any 64 to 72 chevelle, Elcam, MC.

Funny how things change, I like em now.

.
Not true for 71 bumper guards. They are bolted thru the a hole in the bumbers. No clamps/hook, like the earlier Chevelles. The holes have to be drilled thru the chrome bumper in the exact location, or they won't look right.
mmurphy77 Apr 24th, 07, 6:32 PM Thanks Bill, that's what I was afraid of. I wish it was easy like the earlier style. Do the bumpers have to come off to gain access and would I probably have to measure an existing one for proper placement?? Maybe I don't like them THAT much after all.

You are saying there is no hole in the bottom of the 71 bumper?
Is the ear there?
How does the top attach?
Very interesting. I have what I thought was a 71 front that have the holes.
Just curious

No Greg, I'm not saying there is no hole for the bottom bolts. You are correct about the hole on the bottom locating the bumper guards, but there is no strap holding the top portion in place. If you don't have a bumper which was originally drilled for the guards, you will have drill holes thru the bumper for the top bolts. I did on my 71 because I got a set of re-chromed bumpers and they weren't drilled. Scary thing to do on a newly re-chromed bumper, but it can be done with some careful measurements and a little care.
I put masking tape on the area to be drilled to help stop the chrome from chipping.
BillsCamino Apr 25th, 07, 9:09 AM I've got an OEM front & rear set for a '71-'72 if interested.
They mount exactly how Bill has described...hole thru the bumpers.
mmurphy77 Apr 25th, 07, 4:32 PM I'm not sure I have the "moxie" to drill holes in my beautiful bumpers, as much as I love how they look on Bill Rose's car (very similar to my car BTW)! Can the upper bolt be fastened from behind without taking the bumpers off?
Wild Bill, If I can do it without too much trouble, I'll let you know about buying them if they're nice.

I did this project a few years ago, but I'm sure I didn't remove the bumper to attach the bolts. The front bumper has lots of room. Getting the upper bolts in the rear bumper was a little tight but not a big deal. I just put several layers of masking tape on the bumper where the holes were to be drilled, and went for it. Come on, if we can do stuff like this, we may as well ride around in Honda's...

Mine were removed two years ago from a GA car.
For a driver, replace the rubber inserts and you're good to go.
For a show car, I'd have them replated.
