Guys,
I need a cam recommendation for my stock restored,1970,402,SS. I want a healthy one and am looking at the Com. Cams Duel Pattern line with the stock exhaust I have. What do you think?

What about Comp Cams Nostalgia series camshafts, or their Magnum Muscle cams? Should have the sound and feel of the old cams with better power, or at least that's what they say. I heard of someone using their Magnum Muscle cam and it sounded just like the old days.

You could get away with a bit more than what came stock in the 402/350HP motor. It all depends on what you are after. I am running the Crane 286 Powermax, [226/236 @ .050 on 112 LSA] this is definitely more noticeable but not radical, just healthy sounding. Depending on what you are after, I would think anything between 218 to 226 @ .050 on a 112 LSA will be good, go to 114 LSA and get a smoother idle.

I'm running a Comp "Magnum Muscle" cam in my 454 and it seems to be a really good cam for me. It's actually a "Magnum Marine" cam (PN#11-551-5 lists as both)
dur. @ .50 is 242/250 and lift is .575/.604
It's a good cam with a pretty slight lope...perfect if you want a nice sleeper ;)

I also have the same 286 Crane powermax that GRN69CHV is running. It's in a stock .030 over 396 (402) with 9.5 compression. If I were to do it again I would probably go for a wider lobe seperation of 114 for a smoother idle. I must say it does sound nice at idle with a small lope to it but for some reason I get the unburnt gas smell that I can't seem to cure (only at idle). I've used 2 carbs with the same results. I even purchased one from the carb shop that didn't make any difference. I would think a wider lobe seperation would cure some of this. I had this combo dyno'd on a dyno-Jet chassis dyno. Exactly 340 RWHP, I assume this equates to just over 400 flywheel HP.

I think it kind of depends on the compression and configuration that you are running. In all honesty, these motors don't really run the compression that they are advertised at. They are lower. You should really CC the motor to find out what the compression is to find a good cam!!!!
The Pure Stock guys that run at Dan Jensen's Pure Stock Muscle Car Drags use the stock GM camshafts with exhaust manifolds (LS-6)(L-78)(L-89)(L-72)to go fast. It is a very good cam and gentile on the drive train. The compression is up their but the cars run very well with the cam.
