: Hi Perform. Manifold vs Headers
jesusnut2 Apr 23rd, 07, 3:20 AM Friend just gave me a set of Hi Performance manifolds to fit my 283. I am switching to dual exhausts and need to know how much difference in economy and performance will I notice between them. I kinda like to stay stock if at all possible in the engine compartment. Plus the manifold is free where I will have to buy headers. Any exhaust experts out there with an opinion?
OutCast Apr 23rd, 07, 4:14 AM Ken, if they are the ram horn style exhaust, they are quite desirable. Early small block Corvette's used these hi flow exhaust manifolds.
What you gain from performance headers, is less weight, and freer flowing than conventional exhaust...plus they sound bitchin'.
If it's ramhorns you have, save your cash and buy a cam...if not, buy some headers and make some noise.

forcd ind Apr 23rd, 07, 6:08 AM if you can find the large rams horn manifolds (327 ci 300 hp and above) they flowed pretty fair
Roofuss Apr 23rd, 07, 6:59 AM One alternative to think about with stock manifolds might be Brzezinski Racing www.castheads.com I have had 2 different sets of their "ported " exhaust manifolds { both rams horns and log style } and they do nice work , although a bit pricey . Both times I sent my own manifolds to them to have the porting done, and had them back in 2-3 weeks .

Outcast,
Sounds good. I mainly want it to sound cooooool. If I get a little performance boost along the way, so much the better.
Appreciate the advice.

Rich-L79 Apr 23rd, 07, 2:40 PM Is this install intended for a Chevelle chassis? If so, rams horn manifolds won't work, the manifolds outlets will run into the cross member that runs under the engine. The only manifolds that will work in a stock Chevelle chassis are the log style manifolds.
pdq67 Apr 23rd, 07, 7:49 PM Rich,
You sure a set of the rear angled outlet ramshorns won't fit??
They are the smaller ones vs the good big 2.5" outlet dia. ramshorn jobbers tho!!

I don't see how they would work. The log style manifolds are within an inch or so of the crossmember as it is.

Not sure if they are the ram horn mani's or not. My buddy that is offering them says they are hi perform manifolds that will fit 283 or 327. If he is gonna give them to me, I'll take a look and see if it looks like it will fit. If not, I'll let someone else get some use out of 'em.
GRN69CHV Apr 24th, 07, 5:43 AM For a 283 motor, running low rpms, you won't see muich gain at all with headers. Stock SBC manifolds flow plenty to handle the exhaust volume of the 283.

That makes since and I don't want to just throw money away. I am mainly interested in the sound more than performance.
Thanks,
Ken
