: Transmission Trouble M20
70chevelle.ss396 Apr 22nd, 07, 7:39 PM This problem came on suddenly since I drove the car two weeks ago.
The transmission is really hard to engage into any gear and when I go to put it into reverse, the reverse gear grinds like it is still spinning and I have to force it into gear.
Could it be an adjustment for this?
I rebuilt it myself and it worked flawlessly until recently. Anybody have any ideas?
Another question concerning this transmission. Can changing the oil and adding an additive such as Trans-X Limited Slip Gear Oil additive cause this problem.
I don't know why I put this in with the oil but I guess I thought at the time it could be a good think.
Thanks for any help. I hope I don't have to pull it.
DZAUTO Apr 22nd, 07, 8:54 PM Your problem sounds as if the clutch is in bad need of adjustment.
Also, get the limited slip oil out of the tranny. Limited slip oil is designed to allow the posi clutches slip (when needed) smoothly without chattering. You don't want the brass synchronizer rings in a tranny to slip, they need to firmly grip.
jtm60 Apr 22nd, 07, 9:53 PM what dz said.....mine did the same kind of things when it was new and clutch came out of adjustment
70chevelle.ss396 Apr 22nd, 07, 11:02 PM Thanks, will change the oil out tomorrow. Is there anything that I can flush it out with while it is still in the car before I put the new oil in.
Thanks again
67mousehunter Apr 23rd, 07, 7:54 AM there has been alot of talk about transmission lube lately .It says that anybody using GL 5 80W90 should change it right away to GL4 80W90 because GL5 eats sycros.

Don't worry about the samll amount of whatever that will be left, drain it and refill with GL-4 80/90 gear oil. If it bothers you, run it for a 100 miles and repeat the process.
Mike Feudo Apr 23rd, 07, 10:30 AM If it happened all of a sudden make sure the clutch linkage isn't breaking and causing it to not release.
SWHEATON Apr 23rd, 07, 10:40 AM Its not good to have GL-5 lub in a muncie because over a period of time it can corrode/damage the syncros but it will not cause the shifting issues you have exp from 1 day to the next. The GL-5 lube is slicker then the GL-4 lube which can cause a little harder shifting but not what your experiencing.
It seems like something changed suddenly in for clutch linkage and its not disengauging the clutch enough.
Check for loose linkage parts and re-adj clutch to ensure its releasing enough for proper disengaugement and that mat very well cure your problems.

70chevelle.ss396 Apr 23rd, 07, 12:15 PM Thanks, Going out to change the oil now and inspect the linkage.
What is the proper way to adjust the clutch linkage? I have the Z Bar, adjustment rod to the clutch fork and the spring that holds the tension on the fork.
If I disconnect the spring the rod will fall out because of the play. Does that sound right.
70chevelle.ss396 Apr 23rd, 07, 4:36 PM Well found the problem. The Z bar hole is oblonged where the adjustment rod goes in and clips.
Changed the oil and adjusted the rod out a little more for the slop and it shifts good now.
Thanks for all the support.
Time to order new parts for the clutch linkage.
