I have a 68 SS396 Chevelle with a 69 396/375 motor. I want to replace the cam with one that is more radical (bumpy idle). What cam do you guys suggest? Do I stay solid, go to hydraulic, or roller rockers? The distributor needs replaced too so what is a good one? I am going to step up the gears and was thinking 3.73 or 4.11. This car is mainly used for weekend cruising and local auto shows. The valve springs in the car now are shot and they start to float at 4K so I thought if I have to replace the springs, I'd go the whole route and replace the cam, lifters, pushrods, and springs. I've already put a new carb (Edelbrock 750), new exhaust (2.5 in with dumps in front of the axle) and she still does not run or sound good enough! Any suggestions??

As it turns out, I am going with a bigger cam than my original choice, so I am selling it now. It is a Comp Cams 280H (new in box). The new springs would go with the cam. This is a nice rough idle street cam that I think would fit your needs nicely.
E-mail me if interested....... ;)

What ever you do dont waste your $$$ on a mallory ignition. Mine sucks, plain and simple, ive gone through 2 LED's in 2 years, and now my box just went out a few months ago. Im 100% positive its hooked up correctly and not getting voltage spike. Im going to go to a digital MSD setup this winter. Thats my suggestion

Man, you said it all, Nickel. That Mallory stuff is pretty poor. Don't try to re-invent the wheel. Just use the MSD stuff and be happy.

For an ignition,an HEI from Proform or a Accel is all you need, just be sure to properly set the timing curve. For a cam, maybe a small solid grind would suit you best(something in the 235-ish duration @ .050,110-112 LSA).Don't waste your money on roller rockers..IMHO and experience, anything under .600 lift they arent really needed.Don't go steeper than 3.73's for gears, they're all you'll ever need. For an exhaust,I strongly recommend the Flowmaster kit that comes w/o mufflers,it's $199,it's mandrel bent, comes with an h-pipe,and you can choose your own mufflers.

hey if you want a good ignition and dont want to show it off,try the pertronix ignitor II. it converts the stock points dist to electronic. everthing hides under the cap and only has a two wire hookup.its only about 100 dollars and out performs stock hei's. perfect for a stock look.i have one and works fine. i choose that becuse i could not fit a hei behind my tunnel ram.
