: Body Bushing Help!!!!
Barcochris Apr 21st, 07, 1:10 PM I am (hoping) putting my 70 Chevelle Convert body back on a new frame on Sunday. I ordered a Coupe body bushing kit Kit from Ground up on accident, I clicked on the wrong one. I called them and they sent out a supplement kit.. in the original kit there is 8 mount bushings two rubber spacer and two smaller bushings that look like core support bushings. in the supplement kit there is two rubber spacers and two core support bushings. Were do all these go? I know were the rubber disks go I think, on the "hump" going over the rear Axel and just in front of doors on the Inside. Were do the smaller ones go? there are two mounts and the rear of the trunk, two mid trunk, two at the rear seat area, two mid car and two at the front/\. Any help would be fantastic. i really hope I can do this this weekend.

Dean Apr 21st, 07, 3:13 PM Didn't they send the instruction paper with the kit?

Barcochris Apr 21st, 07, 3:43 PM I did not get any instructions, But I know I have two "sets" of bushings that are a smaller OD.
Thanks for the Instructions Dean, but at least the kit that I have is a bit different, or I have the wrong kit.

Looking at the kit in this picture, I need another set of bushings. but I am pretty sure that my car also has two sets of rubber spacers
Dean Apr 21st, 07, 4:17 PM Looking at the picture I posted above now, I don't think that is my 70 convertible instructions.
I probably still have them somewhere and can scan or copy them.
I'll see if I can find them.
The only smaller ID bushings that I remember are the two radiator support mounting bushings.
I do remember there are some (I think one on each side in front) that do not use any bolt.
Barcochris Apr 21st, 07, 4:36 PM Don't worry Dean, I figured it out I think. On the Convert, there is no bushing in position 4. Somehow I ended up with two sets of Core suport bushings.
Barcochris Apr 21st, 07, 5:46 PM Well I am not sure now,
the Assembly instructions say about position 4 "all But Conv" I take that to mean nothing go here. am I correct?
I am so confused and I really want to mate the two together tomorrow.
Barcochris Apr 21st, 07, 6:22 PM OK, i have finaly got it.
Position 4 is just a rubber spacer
And I put nothing in Position 6
So I am all good
Barcochris May 4th, 07, 11:40 AM Ok,
I have another question, but first I need to give some background on my car
I bought this car out of Modesta California a few years ago on Ebay. The seller had told me that the engine compartment was rough and that there was a small rust hole on the driver side floor. I got the car and there was much more damage than that. the engine compartment had a tired 350 and had never been touched as far as clean up. The small hole in the driver side floor was small cause there were sheets of Aluminum pop riveted in. the passenger side had no floor. While it was disappointing it was fixable. I fixed the floors and drove the car for a while as I was collecting parts to do what I wanted to do with it. The car had a little wander as i drove it down the road, I figured it was from a tired front end, but one day I took it buy a buddies shop and found that there was more damage than that. The car must of been stuffed in the rear at some point because the frame is bent and there are newer quarters on the car. From the frame being bent the rear end was not straight so that is were the wander came from. so I bought another frame to put the body on. there have been MANY other pumps along the way but all fixable. Well when I put the body on the new frame there is an issue. the Drivers side front trunk mount. and the Passenger side front most mount do not sit on the body. there is a large gap between both. large enough that the bolt will not start in the trunk mount.
Now my question, can I shim this or do I need to try to pull the body around? all other mounts are not a problem.
thanks for reading this rather long winded post.

no1dc May 5th, 07, 12:15 PM Possibly the "new" frame is twisted or the body from the hit you talked about. I think I'd get it checked by a frame shop. Good luck Pete
Barcochris May 5th, 07, 6:01 PM I know the new frame is straight. The problem is the body. my Question is should I shim the body mounts or try to bolt the body down on the frame?
Barcochris May 7th, 07, 2:42 PM Come on, Can I shim the body mounts? is that the correct way to do this?
I don't understand why shims would be needed with a straight frame.
Are you saying you can't bolt the body down without shims?
Barcochris May 7th, 07, 3:53 PM Yes Dean, I think the body is a bit twisted. I think I can get the body down with out shims but it will eb a bit of work. Is that the better way to go?
vrooom3440 May 7th, 07, 5:25 PM One of the big problems or challenges with convertibles is the flexing of frame and body across the open passenger compartment. This is why convertibles have reinforced frames and extra body mounts.
If I understand you correctly you have a low across the DS-front to PS-rear diagonal and thus a high across the PS-front to DS rear diagonal. You say the new frame is known good. This leaves your body as tweaked. You could probably verify this by checking out the old frame where you will probably find the same diagonal tweak as your body. I would guess the car got hit in the left rear? Probably had a minimalist insurance repair done perhaps many many years ago.
Putting things together crooked, which is what shims would do, is really not a good idea especially if you want to do the job right (and if you spent $$$ on a replacement frame you seem to want to do it right).
Nor is it a good idea to just force the issue because then the body will give a little and the frame will give a little. So you will still wind up with a crooked tweaked car.
No I am afraid you will need to find a way to untweak and straighten the body. And that may require a trip to a frame rack. Good luck, hope I am wrong ;-)

I think you are right also, I was just hoping not.
The car is at a shop now, and he is going to pull it a bit to make it better. I hope so, we will see.
I LOVE OLD CARS!!!!
