Tonight we started my newly built engine in the chevelle. First we put the oil in but one quart was lucas. My mechanic swears by it, says its the most awesome thing for the life of an engine. Whats your opinion. Was this the right thing to do on a newly rebuilt engine.

Travis,

My machine shop guy recommended the same thing. He and his father are very skeptical people, has a very good reputation, he stands behind his work and has never steered me wrong. There must be something behind it, if not he would not have recommended it to me. It gets my vote.

Certainly didn't hurt it, and probably did it some good.

but I'm a little bias on the subject.:D :D :D

TRAVIS,Just curious, why wait untill AFTER you fire up your new motor to ask this important question?

I dont see how it could hurt other then if the Lucus oil is very slick like synthetic oil where it can cause problems with ring seal/breakin,other then that not a problem IMHO.

Since your on the subject of motor oil FYI,if your running a flat tappet cam make sure your running an oil like Chevron Delo 400 or shell rotella T both 15W-40 diesel oils that still have some ZDDP/Zinc left in them (though reduced some new 2007 gov regs) for some additinal valvetrain (cam/lifters) anti wear protection because most of todays motor oils dont have the ZDDP in it anymore.

I use 1 quart of their synthetic oil stabilizer in my race car. I had an oil pickup tube come off a couple of years ago during a pass and didn't notice the oil pressure was very low (below 10 psi at idle). I pulled the enigne and found no damage at all. You will always find 1 quart in my engines.

2 thumbs up from me!

I love watching the little 3.5 hp B&S lawnmower engine run w/ no oil!

What, w/ half it's crankcase cut away so you can watch the rod go up and down as water is sprayed on it!!

I started using it in my daily driver when I saw metal particles in the oil during an oil change. Last motor I saw this on began to knock from a rod or crank journal shortly thereafter so it made me very nervous. I thought I'd try the Lucas and the motor is still going strong for 30,000+ miles now. That's convinced me. That demo display they have at the auto parts stores is pretty interesting and convincing, too. The one where the oil clings to the plastic gear as you turn the crank.

Any online sellers of Lucas oils ? :confused:You can find anything on the internet. :D I don't know of any place offhand, though.

why does it have to be an online vendor? most parts stores around here sell the stuff.

this place does a test on different oil products. Probably biased since it's not an independent company doing the test but it's interesting.

Do you have an Advance or Autozone near you? I've also seen it at one out of the 4 or 5 Walmart's around my area, also at NAPA and Carquest. Any of those near you? :(

We have an Auto Zone and a NAPA and both are really pretty useless-- unless I need windshield washer solvent , Turtle Wax ,or an air freshener ;) !! The local Wally World { as usual } buys stuff in lots and never has the same items all the time and certainly have never seen Lucas oils of any type in any of these stores !! I'm up in the central mountains of Arizona { 100 miles north of Phoenix } and mail order or online ordering is a whole lot easier for me than running all over trying to find something, thats the reason I asked......sorry for anyones inconvience or trouble regarding this :clonk:

Are you guys talking about the Lucas Oil Stabilizer or Lucas engine oil?

im talking about the quart of lucas you put in during the oil change with the other oil.

I don't know, if you use a good quality oil and you've prepped the new engine properly (pre-oiled it, used good moly on the cam and lifters) you shouldn't need anything but the oil itself. A bottle of GM EOS is good insurance for a new cam on the initial start up. If you aren't using the best oil you can find, no additive is going to make up for it.

The oil stabilizer that Lucas sells is awesome stuff. It reminds me of that STP stuff , that thick engine honey. I have used it , it worked great for me.

I too normally don't go for 'snake oils', but years ago I had a '61 Corvair Wagon that ran a bit hot and turned 20w-50 into the thickness of water in the summer months. Plus the motor always had a slight rattle to it at idle and under heavy load. Lastly, the hot running temps forced me to run 91 octane or it would ping when leaving from a stop.

Well, a diesel mechanic buddy of mine always swore by Lucas for years, even before anyone else really knew about it. His employer bought it by the drum.

Anyway, he brought me a quart of it one day after hearing me tell him about the Corvair. I wasn't going to risk it until he told me that if the motor died within 1 year of using the Lucas he would rebuild the motor for free. I figured why not and added at the next oil change.

Shock and disbelief.

The Corvair ran smoother, ran at least 20 degrees cooler, and allowed me to run 87 octane in any weather, no pinging at all. It even killed the rattles I was hearing. Plus my oil pressure was up at idle.

The next oil change I did not add Lucas again. I was beginning to think the Lucas was a fluke, but about 100-200 miles into that oil change the temp started to rise again, the rattles slowly came back, and so did the pinging when running 87. So, I removed the oil filter (held just under a quart) and added a quart of Lucas to the oil. Within 1 mile everything was great again.

8 years later I still use it in all my engines, including my lawn mover and motorcycle. I use the sync version in my HHR though. The rest get the regular stuff.

My 454 in my Datsun gets the most attention because I have huge fears on wiping a lobe. I have a 8 quart pan, I run 6 quarts of 15w-40 Delo 400, 1 quart of EOS or CD2 Oil Booster (same stuff), and 1 quart of Lucas.

I bought a quart of the Lucas stabilizer but havent run it yet.

there was a thread a long while back about how it may cling to parts better better, but can also cause the oil to froth and foam at high rpm. Anybody hear that?
