: Re-wiring a '65

I am contemplating rewiring my '65 coupe. Two questions come to mind. #1. This is a complete and running car not a restoration in progress. How difficult is it to run the wires with the car in this state?
#2. It seems like most folks really like either Painless harnesses or American Autowire, any insight into either one of these products would be very much appreciated (especially a '65 specific application). If I go through with this I don't want to make it any more difficult than it has to me. The car is fairly stock from a wiring standpoint with the exception of a one wire alternator and HEI. There is no AC, power windows or anything like that. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Are you wanting to replace the underdash harness? The front harness, engine harness, and rear harness will be easy. The dash harness will be more of a pain to do, but can be done. I would buy a harness made for you car not a generic one. Much easier to work with and alot less headache. Take your time and do one at at time to make your troubleshooting easier.

Thanks for the feedback, doing one harness at a time is great advice. I Can't believe that didn't occur to me!

I would first pull out the guage cluster on the dash. Quite simple to do and take a look. It may just need cleaning up with some minor repairs, like properly soldering any joints, retaping and then lacing in nice and neat.
I was going to install a new harness. When i looked up from under the dash it was rats nest. After i pulled out the guages and was able to see it dead on it wasn't that bad. One weekend I had everything nice and clean again. Worth a look see anyway.
Good luck

I agree with blumont. I pulled my dash harness out and checked everything, clean it and re-taped it. Much cheaper than 400.00.

I was in the same position as you with my 65. I ended up replacing the headlight, motor, and dash harness with units from M&H. It wasnt cheap, but after some research on this site, it looked like the best way to go. Everything just plugged right in. I went one step further and updated the engine harness using one of MADD's electrical kits. That took more time than installing the original harness.

Good Luck,

Mike
