I was digging arround in the garage today and found a set of OEM GM 3.31 12bolt gears with a date of 10 69. they are used and have sum surface rust on them they look good condition, can they be reused? Its just surface rust not even bad, but its there :confused:

I say yes .Just clean the gear set and inspect it for improper or excessive wear. GM gears usually dont make noise properly set up.

I'll take 'em! Need that ratio to match my bud's car. Match race of his big buck 454HO crate motor to a budget 454 from recycled parts. Goal is good manners, fair mpg, good as or better than performance for a fraction of the cost. His ext lobe is .540 so my cam cannot be larger than that. My 70 Elky is my daily driver.

He just installed 3.31s. I'd like to install 3.31s but no new ones available so would have to go 3.42. Was trying to keep the race engine vs engine as much as possible.

Just clean her up with a brass brush and spin em again. 3.31 is the best gearset GM ever concieved IMO

in the past ive glass beaded gear sets with no problems.just clean well when blasting is complete

They should work all right. There are several ways to clean the rust off. Just don't damage the gear any more when removing the rust.
