Looking at replacing the cam in my 396. it's a 69 block, 9.5cr, oval port heads, and an edlebrock performer. I just had the heads redone, and was told the motor had a cam in it when I got it, but didn't know what kind. Took it out, but can't find any markings except "t103" on the face behind cam gear, and "cwc" between the lobes. While I have it out, summit is running a sale on crane energizers, buy cam...lifters free. So.......should I spring for the new cam, and which one. The 272 or 282. I think the 284 will be too much. Any suggestions?

I don't know performance-wise which is better, but I have a crane energizer 272 in my 350. Good idle lope, if that's something that concerns you. Not too rough sitting at a light or anything, but just an overall good lope.

i have ran the 272 and the 284 crane cams in my 396 engines..........and the 272 is a fine piece sounds good........the 284 i ran a 2500 stall with it......other then the stall there was not a big difference in engine performance between the two as far as mile per hour wise in the 1/4 mile ......but over the years i found the 396 does respond better with a dual pattern cam shaft..........and more lift......lol
