I am going from a bench to buckets. I ordered the 2 piece bench to bucket adapters from opg. I cannot get the seats to sit right with the brackets. When I just set the seats on the floorboard and use the 2 outer existing mounting holes and shim the rear outer (closest to the door) bracket up about an inch the seats seem to fit fine. Has anybody mounted bucket seats without using any of the adapter brackets. It looks to me that if I use the original mounting holes and just drill 2 new holes on the inner side and bolt them down they fit fine. Is there anything wrong with mounting the seats this way?

I don't think it would be safe if you were in an accident.

I'm going to put a bracket underneath similar to the adapter brackets for strength.

So you didn't use the brackets either?

Me either..Used huge washers under floor. Other people don't go for it, others do. Mine has been this way for at least 5 or 6 years from previous owner.

If you use the outer holes for bucket seats, the seat belt retractors won't clear the plastic side trim on the bucket seat. Check this first before drilling uneeded holes through the floor pan.

It rubs...

I mounted buckets in my red sta wgn. I used the left rear bolt hole as a guide. I use the outer bolt hole in the seat frame, To keep from rubbing the seat belt retractor. Shimmed the right frt. seat brkt. On the bottom used 2" X 2" X 1/4" plates on the bottom. The bucket mounted in this position is a little close to the wheel. Do some testing then some drilling.

Mine are mounted without the brackets by previous owner. At first the holes pi**ed me off but after reading the experiences of others I found it to be the lesser of two evils. I build and drive drivers so it is not deal breaking. Yes the seat belt retractor rubs but my seats are rarely moved and one pass of Krylon returns it back. There are other larger things to worry about ; like how loud my wife will let me crank Jimi,Stevie, and Eric through my Alpines.

I went ahead and mounted my bucket seats without the adapter brackets. I shimmed the rear outer original mounting hole with washers to raise that side up just a bit. I drilled holes through the floorboard for the inner mounting holes and used big fender style washers under the floorboard. The seat are close to the seat belt retractor but that's not a huge problem to me. They sit level and look fine. To me the adapter brackets are a huge pain in the a**. Maybe the newer 4 piece brackets are better but I'm happy with the results not using the 2 piece brackets.

You had to shim the outer rear mount up with washers because you didn't use the brackets that lift the front inside corner up.
