I took my car for a test drive and it ran fine. I got on it a little, drove another block then got on it a little again, only up to about 5,000rpm., then let off the gas and it quit running. I was able to coast home thankfully. I pulled the cap, it and the rotor are fine. I have power (full 12 volts) at the cap so I hooked up a spark plug tester. When I turned it over there was spark and it started right away. This stock HEI distributor worked fine for me all last year and I am using the same stock coil. I have since started it a few times and went for one short drive ... all good so far. I won't ever, on purpose, run this engine over 6,000rpm so I am staying with the HEI.

Being I hate gremlins should I just replace the coil? Is there a suggested coil that is better than a stock one from the parts store? Is there just one module in the distributor that can go bad? With the problem happening right after a high rev one of those 2 components might be freaking out. I do have another HEI I can put in there.

What would you do?

The problem might have not been ignition related at all. Could be a fuel delivery issue. I wouldn't replace anything till the fault can be determined.

When I was under the hood I hit the gas and it did squirt. I also fluttered the gas pedal when it quit to no avail.

I agree, bring your timing light (and a friend) with you on your next ride and if it dies hook up the timing light to verify spark. On my old 327 with the stock hei the 12 volt wire would come loose every once in a while and the engine would die. Your situation could be something simple as well.
