I was looking through my summit catalog for the millionth time yesterday, and I paid a little bit closer to the K&N substack. (this thing http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/knn-85-0200_w.jpg )

My question is, does this thing really do anything, or is it just a gimmick? Would my money be better spent on a proform main body? My carb is a holley 650 DP.

Also, has anyone tried the summit re-useable air filter elements? I found the 14" one I need for $25, which is a lot cheaper than the K&N.

*EDIT* - I figured it might be helpful if i gave my motor specs. It is a 385 with dart iron eagle heads, 64cc chamber, 200 runners, 2.02/1.94 valves, dart dual plane ("air gap") motor, crane magnum 1.52 roller rockers. Cam is 234/234 at .5 lift, with .488 lift with stock rockers. I realize that may be too much cam for my 2200 stall converter but if it doesn't work I can always swap it out later.

What would you say that my best bet for a cam would be? I plan on using this mostly as a nice weather cruiser, and it will see occasional track use.

Car Craft had a filter test in their last issue

on their bigblock they said the substack was worth a few HP, if u got the cash it's worth a shot...

I'm thinking about getting one later on

PS: Havent tried a summit filter, but it's likely the same thing as a K&N...all the other are. Just like medical gaugze or something instead of paper...some magazine a while back did heads up dyno testing with em all and they were all virtually the same, like 1-2 hp and tq differences which could just as easily have occurred without changing filters

I added a 1" 4 hole spacer, stub stack and K$N at the same time. this was in my '69 camaro, 355, xe274 cam, stock compression, performer rpm and 750 edelbrock. with a manual tranny it wouldn't pull good in 5th if the revs dropped below 2k. the spacer probably did more than the rest but after installing all three items now it pulls smoothly from 1500rpm in top gear. the bottom end and mid range is stronger, didn't help on the top end. the xe274 cam gives out around 5800-6k. i don't know how much the stub stack would help with a HP series or proform body, but the edelbrock carb seemed to like it.

what color are the Summit brand?

I like my blue Holley but want to go bigger anyway, and if the Summit is cheaper I'll bite

Yep 202/160 is what I meant.

The summit filter is the same purplish color as the K&N, but half price. (about.)

Thanks for the input, fellas.

Is anybody using the Proform main body? It claims big HP gains but I'm wondering with a streetable setup like mine if it would really be worth it. I would not miss the choke much since it would be a summer cruiser.

Just looked on the site and they show red, purple, green, white, and blue in the pic but I can only find listing for red, white, and green

If they actually have a blue one I'll get it instead of the holley power shot (I want it to match the car)

Of course the white one would be the ultimate sleeper filter :D

I think you're looking at cone filters. Those are for EFI cold air setups. I'll see if I can find the one I am looking at for you.

EDIT: found it, part# SUM-239143. This is for a 14" round, 3" high filter.

WTF, wow those are cool looking... I had no idea they had that many! I wonder if you can only keep it that color until you have to give it an oil bath again, wouldn't it discolor it?

The white reusable PN is SUM-239318 for a 14 x 3".

The oil generally has the right color if u stick with brands: I have a blue holley, but I used K&N oil on it...now its kinda black since the oil is purple they didn't go well together

I bet Holley Powershot or Accel Cool Blue oil would keep the color

But like I said I can't find the blue ones on the site, I might call em later on.

I want to go to 14x4 minimum.

You guys sound like a bunch of Women at a shoe store, matching your filter to your car. Anyway, I have the K&N and it works great, but the other gauze filter (Summit) are almost exactly the same.

Personally,I like those cheap 14X3 Purulator air filters :D
I tested a K&N filter at the track once,no difference in MPH or ET
