Why did some smallblocks come with 6.75 or 6 7/8 balancers and some with an 8" balancer  ? The reason I'm asking,my sons balancer(6.75) has broke loose and the outer ring was against the timing chain cover, and a friend has 3 8" balancers and he said he give us one free. Would it make any difference, and no, the engine was not balanced.

no it wont make no difference at all last i knew gm had the bigger 8" balancers on the high performance motors.......higher out put anyway.....................i do know this tho the bigger 8" will control hormonics alot better then the smaller one............around here alot of the racers run the smaller balancers on there motors for less mass that the crank has to spin ....taking weight of the crank allows for the rpms to come up faster.......go get that free one and enjoy........

by the way there are two different timming marks for the balancers so make sure you get your free one with the TDC mark in the same place as your old one...

There were 2 8" balancers. One for a 350 truck( thin) and hp(thick). Like said befor, you will not see a difference.
