: Good News boys!!!
Travis69chevelle Apr 18th, 07, 6:45 PM Well its me again on the update of my chevelle that im putting the new (used) engine in. One-it was not a 383, we took the oil pan off and ran the numbers on the crank, its a 350, maybe bored we dont know, but...everything inside looks brand new and was all tight like it barely had any miles. under the valve covers everything looked brand new. We already got in a new oil pump even though the other one looked brand new, im not taking any chances. We got a new polished holley 650 4 bar carb. new water pump, new double chain timing chain. i bought a new fuel pump, electric chock, new oil and temp guages and tac with light. It already has a new edelbrock performer intake. I have a new hei dist and wires. Everyone at the garage were very impressed when we opened it up. So thank god for this blessing....so far. Should be runnin in a day or so, i will get to you on the running condition. thanks all for the great advice.

I would at least ask for money back on the 3.75 crank (which you didnt get) !!!
flpackerbacker Apr 18th, 07, 8:16 PM glad to hear you got what looks to be a good engine.I do agree with Jason that you should ask for refund of crank not recieved.good luck hope all goes smoothly.post some pics when done
:beers:
BACK FROM THE DEAD Apr 19th, 07, 1:29 AM rock on!

dmg1029 Apr 19th, 07, 10:17 AM Good luck Travis. :hurray:
Keep us posted. maybe even a few pics??/
Travis69chevelle Apr 19th, 07, 6:07 PM Well was gonna replace the timing chain, but we opened it up and it had brand new pete jackson gear drives. Things are looking so up. I hope a real nice cam was put in also.
Skeeveman Apr 19th, 07, 6:11 PM I would ditch that gear drive and go for a double roller myself, but then again, that's me. Also, at the very least, you should be able to pull the cam gear off and see just exactly what cam it is if there are parts numbers on the end.
Good luck, Travis!
Travis69chevelle Apr 19th, 07, 6:35 PM How many horses would you estimate i should have on a rebuilt 350 with all these things. I guess also we still dont know what pistons or if it were bored or what cam it has. But if not, what should we expect.
bb489 Apr 19th, 07, 7:27 PM The two most important things needed to even guesstimate horsepower are missing. What kind of heads and what are the cam specs? Also what is the compression ratio? These three variables could be mismatched and give <200 hp, or matched correctly and give 400+hp.
Johnny O Apr 19th, 07, 7:48 PM Agree, too many things are unknown. That's the problem with buying a used engine, unless the builder has kept all the records and receipts. But so far, looks like you made out pretty good.
I have to agree with Jake, get rid of the gear drive while you have it apart. You might think it's cool for now, but you'll grow tired of it really fast! Try doing a search on gear drives and see what the consensus is. Good luck with it at any rate! John
bc69ss Apr 19th, 07, 8:21 PM How come you all don't like gear drives?
Johnny O Apr 19th, 07, 9:02 PM They serve no purpose, other than to make noise. The noise gets annoying very quickly. I actually had people ask me what was wrong with the engine. As I said, with me, it was cool for about a week. I was only a novelty, and I went right back to a good chain and gears. There is also lots of talk about harmonics being transferred to the cam, lifters and distributor with a gear drive, but I have yet to see or read any factual information on that. Like I mentioned, do a search and read what others say.
bc69ss Apr 19th, 07, 9:22 PM I've got a quiet gear drive on my 355 in my camaro. You can barely hear it over the engine.
Travis69chevelle Apr 19th, 07, 9:43 PM So why do these gears cost so much more than chains. Why would people want them if they are so bad. My mechanic was opening it to put a double chain in that he ordered and was excited about those gears, so sent the chain back.
YenkoChevelle69 Apr 19th, 07, 10:04 PM Most people use them because they sound like a "blower".... that's really it.
Edit: I'd also ask for some money back for the crank that is not there.
BACK FROM THE DEAD Apr 20th, 07, 9:40 PM i think i've heard that they can be slightly more accurate than chains ,but unless your turning 10,000 RPM's you will never know.
i agree...novelty. i hated mine after a couple weeks too.
Travis69chevelle Apr 21st, 07, 1:26 AM Well guys we got the engine fired tonight, it sounds "AMAZING". Its got a nice cam in it from the sound of it and it sounds like a race car, its bad. We still have to hook up the radiator and stuff so we didnt get to drive it, but i cant wait to see how good it drives now. That chevelle is coming back to life.
