I have a set of 17X9 Wheel Vintique SS billets on the back of my 70 and can only find one tire mfg that makes a 28" tall tire for a 17" wheel. It's a Nitto SUV tire. 275/50-17 Anybody know of a performance tire out there that's 28 (or so) tall on a 17" wheel?

I have looked around at 17 and 18 inch tires and seen many taller tires. 255/50/17 is the closet I have seen and its only 27 inches.

Jim,
Try Yokohama. I buddy of mine has 275/50/17's on his impala and I beleive they are 28 inches tall. Man those wheels are expensive...they've have gone from $480 to $660 in the last year and a half at Nostalgia wheel.

I found two different tires offered by Discount Tire that are 275/50/17 (27.83" tall).

Here's a couple of tires. Goodyear Eagle is the affordable one. 255/55/17 blackwalls.

I just went through this drill for my '66 Impala. There really isn't a lot to choose from in a 17" tire that is 28" +/- a fraction, tall.
The link that Dave posted shows the Nitto 450, and the Falken S/TZ01. The Nitto 450, while it has a great looking tread pattern (IMO), received really BAD reviews. The Falken S/TZ01 is engineered for SUV's. That basically means it has a much higher load rating, mostly obtained by much stiffer sidewalls. It did get great reviews though. From SUV owners.
The link that Don posted shows the Avon and the GY. The Avon is horrifically expensive. The GY has a rather pedestrian tread pattern.
Here's a little calculator from Discount Tire. You enter the tire size you are considering and it calculates the basica dimentions of the tire, including height.

If you go slightly taller, 275-60/17's are common. This puts you at 30" tall, which is stall an easy fit for a Chevelle.

I just ordered a wheel/tire package from COY'S WHEELS. Falken 275/50/17 S/TZ01 for the rear on 9" C-67's and 235/55/17 fronts on 8". The 275's are 28" and the 235's are 27.2". Four more weeks to wait because the rims are on back-order.

Thanks for the feedback! I have the Nitto 450 and they look good but don't hook at all. The 255 series tires are not wide enough and the 275/60 I had on it originally are just too tall. 30" They fit but didn't look good. I'll look at the Falken and see if some of the 275/60 are slightly shorter than the others. Thanks again.
