: Solid Cam Break-In
DEEBOO Jun 28th, 04, 11:56 PM I took my inner spring out and left the dampener in the springs. Is this correct or should I remove the dampeners to break in a solid cam. The profile is in the signature... I am using Lunati dual valve Springs #73124 which is 130 seat 330 open
SSchevy400 Jun 29th, 04, 12:54 AM My cam is a Solid Comp, 288 advertised...259 at .050...550 lift ground on a 106. My builder said dont worry about removing the inner springs. he said as long as its broked in correctly and adjusted right, there should be no problems. 5 months now and havent had to adjust then yet!
i would listen to your builder tho!
jethro81z28 Jun 29th, 04, 2:10 AM Same cam I had put in DEEBOO and I love itI also changed my air-gap to a port match Vic.Jr. ran best sofor 12.34 in drive shifting @5500 Iam going to reset the valves and shift @ 6400 and get dirty with it.
jethro81z28 Jun 29th, 04, 2:12 AM Sorry ment to post sig.
427L88 Jun 29th, 04, 6:26 AM Back in the UD days, the cam card said to break-in on outers only. I'm a paranoid nut on break-in. Plenty of lubes, slather it with EOS, borrowed an oil pump drive and oiled the motor at 90 crank intervals, etc...
It's all better than having to tear down a new mill to clean the crap out of it when a cam wipes.
I think I'd be tempted to leave them in place being they don't add alot of pressure, but they won;t be needed at <3000 rpms either.
gasgzlr Jun 29th, 04, 9:55 AM jethro,
what size tires are you using? are you using traction devices? we have nearly identical setups and since i'm just getting ready to set up the nova i'm really interested in finding good combos that work smile.gif
Tracy Focht Jun 29th, 04, 10:21 AM I have always broken in the solids with the inner springs out....always been fine, some guys broke in the same cam with the inner, adn wiped a lobe...who knows?? :D
jethro81z28 Jun 29th, 04, 4:05 PM gasdsir Iam running nitto 555r 275-50r15 on 8" wheels (still a trction prob.) Compettion Engineering sub-frams and traction bars.

DEEBOO Jul 2nd, 04, 9:45 AM Thanks
I broke the engine in yesterday and boy the SBC 400 makes some torque and was still pullling at 6500 rpm's. The was $300.00 well spend and the dyno lasted from 0930 am til 0700 pm. I broke the cam in with the outters only then after break in we put the inners in the car and beat the snot out of it. I will post dyno results later.
Thanks to everyone who have help mentor, coach and taught me throuh this buildup. graemlins/hurray.gif

AllGoNoShow Jul 2nd, 04, 11:26 AM DEEBOO- When you adjusted the valves did you use the Intake closed/exhaust opening technique or the 2 turn over tecnique you get in Chilton's manual that is not as accurate?
I'm going through the same thing and would appreciate your advice. I'm not sure if doing it the ICEO method would scrape off too much of the cam lube as it would have to be turned over alot.
Also how much cam lube did you use? I got two of the little tubes of Crane moly lube but not sure how much to put on(don't wanna clog the filter).
Any advice you can pass on on how to have a solid cam survive would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
PS- What do you lube(if at all) the cam journals with? I just got my Summit shipment and the cam lube says to not use on cam journals.

I put the #1 Piston on TDC and went through the firing order (18436572) every 90* TDC and adjust one cylinder at a time, it help if your balancer have the marks at every 90* like mine did.

I put it real heavy on all cam lubes, bottom of the lifters, and distributor gear. I used 2 -4oz lunati cam lube. This stuff will not clog the filter it will dissolve into the oil.

Take your time and double check everything twice if you are not sure STOP and ask question here, make sure the installed height and spring are set up correctly, be patient

On the cam bearing journals I used the assembly lube that you used on the main and rod bearings.
