: Loose wires near starter - what are they?
bochnak Apr 17th, 07, 9:12 AM There are 4 wires running down to the starter (or same general area) on my 70' with HEI. A purple, white, black (small gage), and orange.
I know the purple is for the "S" terminal, and the white is the balast. What are the black and orange wire for?
The unused wires, white, black, and orange were just bundled and taped up. I would like to terminate them in a better location.
pjkemo Apr 17th, 07, 9:28 AM I dont know about the black wire, but the orange one could be for the blower motor.Does it work?

Yeah, the blower motor works. I have A/C, but the compressor is shot.
I don't like the idea of having loose wires in a greasy engine compartment (yes, I have to take care of leaks, too). I don't want the car to go up in flames!!!

There should be no balast used with a factory type HEI.

Do they look like factory wires or aftermarket? If aftermarket, they could be anything, you would have to trace them to find out. If they look factory, it could have a 72 harness, orange (should be red) is main power and black for amp gauge.
bochnak Apr 17th, 07, 12:51 PM The balast wire is not used for the HEI. The PO ran a separate 12 ga wire that I am in the process or rewiring. I want to replace the balast wire with a new 12ga and pass it through the bulkhead.
I beleive the orange wire also passes through the bulkhead.
anychevy Apr 18th, 07, 3:18 AM May have something to do with the TCS or kickdown switch maybe ? Elree would know.

What is a TCS? My tranny is a TH350, I think that it has a kickdown cable instead.
Thanks for the reply.
I'll try to post pics tonight.
bzack Apr 18th, 07, 11:55 AM I have the same thing, I bunch of taped off wires going towards the starter, I have a 1971 chevelle that came with a th-350. The purple one runs the starter but as for the rest, who knows, the are taped off at one end and run into some combo of wires never to be seen again at the other end.

TCS stands for transmission controled spark. It was used for emissions control. Usually they got disconnected.
bochnak Apr 18th, 07, 10:38 PM Here is a pic of the orange wire exiting the bulkhead. I found it taped up/terminated near the passenger side valve cover.

Ya, I would like to eliminate the clutter and reduce risk of shorts.

Pics are worth a 1000 words. That orange wire went to the blower. On a A/C car it is not used.
Elree Colby Apr 19th, 07, 12:09 AM Yes the black wire went to the trans switch for TCS. It is on the left side on a TH350, right side on a TH400 and 3 or 4 speed man.

Thanks. So what would you recommend I do with it? Remove it from the bulkhead? Leave it taped up? My A/C compressor is siezed and don't plan on replacing it for years.

Thanks. When would this wire be hot? Should I remove it?

Personally I would just leave it taped up in the harness.
