Well as some may remember last fall I quized you all on 496 building ideas...Took from Nov to Aug but today was its maiden voyage.
Nothing special, 73 pick-up motor, Eagle 496 kit [off eBay] 781 heads, Harold cam, c-396 intake, 880 Avenger, Hooker 2'', stock converter-turbo 400, Painted pontiac blue in 69 GTO.
Even though everything was centered around low end power, it still wants to rev.I think it REALLY wants a double pumper and some converter too.
Question, With 10:25...What can I run for total timing with 93 octane and be safe? What RPM should all the timing be in by? Thanks.

I would shoot for 36-38* total..no later than 3K
Base 16-18*,so basically you need 20* mechanical
I run 10.59 to 1 in my 454,and use the aformentioned timing curve.Runs fine on 92-93 octane

If the motor is highly efficient even 36 may be too much. Only way to really know is to dyno or ET it with varying total timing settings. Which cam did you use? The " all- in" timing rpm is really goverened by gearing. What gears you running? high gears would want it earlier, lower ( + #) would prefer it later. Mine comes in at 3200, but my gearing is deep.

Please give us some details on the cam and balance of the package. This may put the myth of strokers not wanting to rev (other than an all out race stroker).

I'd have to go digging for the cam card. Lunati .600 lift rumpty rump...3:31 gears turbo 350 converter with a 400 box.
I checked the dist today was at 8@ idle with a total of 28 @ 4000...Wow that sucked...
Put in the heavy weights and light springs...never moved the distributer, now has 16 @ idle and 37 @ 3200...
Think it runs better? Oh yeah....Tomorrow I think I'll bump it 'till it spark knocks. Still no Vac advance hooked up..might try that first.
Takes a while when you really don't know what you are doing.....
