I went up that way 3 years ago. I stayed in Grand Rapids which is about 45-60 minutes north of Kalamazoo. It wasn't a bad area, but not sure what is closer to Kalamazoo. When I went up that way, I took 90 West to 290 North to 75 North to 275 North to 96 West (this is too Grand Rapids mind you). Then coming home, I took the southern route through Kalamazoo via 94 East (west going out there).
