This might not be the best section but I always ask the BBC stuff in here and it goes over well smile.gif Im still shipping around for a good 454 block, someone e-mail me and said $100 for the block and it's out of a 68' Vette, did the 68's come w/ big blocks? This sounds like the guy that emailed me a month or 2 ago and it turned out it was really a 396.

68 corvette did come with big blocks, but no 454s.

sometimes you never know exactly what people mean by what they type. maybe he meant that the 454 was installed in a 68 vette, not necessarily that it was an original engine.

ask him for the casting numbers from the block and the suffix code that way you can be sure what block it is.

1970 was the first year for the 454.

Yep, 68 vettes came with rat motors, even way back then.

427 would be the size. Blocks are the same bore as the 454 but don't have the bottom of the cylinders relieved for the longer stroke of 454.

If someone is willing to sell you a good '68 block out of a '68 block for $100.00, you better buy it. Only big block in the '68 Vette was the 427 - 4 bolter at that. Better find out the numbers and the rest of it for sure. '68 & '69 Vette guys would pay a nice price for that block if its legit.

I thought only the L71-435hp 427's were four bolt.
The rest were two bolts. My 69 Corvette 390hp 427 block is the latter.

It was my understanding that all the Vette Big Blocks were always 4-bolt. The same went for the small block 350's of the day up to 1970. I could be wrong on this though. The only 427 Vette motor that I definitely saw was a '67 427/390 HP motor that we took apart on a friends resto project about 7 years ago. That one was a 4-bolt, oval ports and hydraulic cam. That was a matching numbers car by the way when it came apart for resto.

$100 for a good 454 block does sound good.
Has the block been checked for cracks? What is the current bore? Are you getting the main caps too? or are they extra. And its a standard height block not a truck block?? Just thinking out loud??
