i want to put a kill switch in my car to try to prevent my car getting stolen,,, right now the dash is all apart getting a covan's dash and all new wiring, so it's a good time to do this... my question is:

what amperage rating do i need for the switch?

There are several ways of doing this with a switch by interupting one or more circuits, a standard 20 amp toggle switch will do.
kill ignition ?
kill start ?
kill trigger to coil (if not HEI) ?
or an imobalizer module that kills 3 or more circuits ?
How hard do you want to make it for them ?

i was going to either kill the starter or kill the ignition.. im planning on getting lojack for it too.. i know that if they want it bad enough, they will get it, hopefuly this will discourage them... so,, what kinda amperage switch would i need for both options: 1)starter 2)ignition

i have a 20 amp switch, will that do the job?

Either ? yep. you would need a double pole switch for both.
Your only interupting the start wire to the solenoid, basically the same job as the NSS on an auto.

The switch could kill the starter, but the starter solenoid is easily bypassed in the engine bay.

I think a better disabling mechanism is to use the switch to ground the ignition coil. The starter will still work but the engine will never fire up.

If your car has an electric fuel pump, the switch could disable the fuel pump. The engine could be started and the car driven a short distance (maybe a quarter mile), but it would die and not restart, leaving the thieves stranded on the road in plain sight of passing traffic.
