So I've run up on a really good deal on a dart based shortblock. It's going to be a pump gas motor, hydraulic roller cam, and drivin on the street most of it's life, BUT I have a couple of high hp cars to deal with around here. I'm looking at a set of Dart pro 1's, but do I go with the 230's or stick to the smaller 215's? I'm looking to get the most out of the motor while still being able to run on the street without HUGE drivability issues. Let me know what you think! (its going in a 65 nova)

Light car, large cubic inch small block, I would go with something with at least 22o cfm of better.

My vote is the 230's.

I'd go with the AFR 227's.

As an example, I run the 230 Pro 1's on my motor. At the time I first built it two years ago I set it up for forced induction but I ran it NA for the first year. It was 400ci, 8.5:1 with 120 pounds on cranking cylinder pressure and I had my turbo cam it, a 114 lobe sep cam. The ci may be fine, but everything else was back asswards for running that big of a runner NA. Needless to say, the motor ran way better then I expected. Off idle was a little hard to tune with the lack of compression, I'm sure the port velocity was whacked, but I did get it dialed in. I just had to work on the squirter size and pump cam. If your going to run 9.5:1+ I doubt you have any issues with your increased ci.

My main point is, my car ran a best of 11.70 @ 114.7 in this crazy configuration. This is an all steel car in my photo with full stock interior, so the weight was also there. It really depends on what your after performance wise with the runner size you decide on. I went with the big runner because I knew I was going to force things through.

On a side note, my first head choice was the AFR 227's but I waited to late to order heads and they were eight weeks out and the Darts I could get mail order that week.

I hope this helps,
Corey

My neighbor buddy runs a Dart IE 427 SB in his 63 chevy II. He runs the CNC 227cc Brodix M2 track 1's. I HIGHLY recommend these heads for your motor. It has tons of power and he can run down the highway/blacktop/interstate at 1,800-2,200 RPM with no lag. His tranny is a TKO 600. Hes run 11.02@125.5MPH. This was with a fuel delivery issue and the motor was going very lean on top end. I can tell you theres ALOT left in this motor. This motor is a 10.5:1 compression and he runs a 312/312, 268/268 .575/.575 lift on a 108 solid flat tappet cam.

I ported a set of Dart 215 pro ones for a 427 small block I recently built. They flowed 290cfm on the int. @ 600 and 225 on the exh. The engine made 560 hp @ 6000 and 550 ft. LBS. @4600. The car was very drivable . Also, its 11 to 1 and 250/260 on 108. If you need much more power you need 18 deg. or possibly sb2's

That big cubic inch usually requires a bigger head to breathe ....the 215 will give you more bottom end , but hell ......how much more bottom end power you gonna need unless you can hook it up ? Big Dawg drink alot of water .....put the 230's on and let er eat ! PRO 1's baby !

I would use the 230s and if you want a head thjat you just pull out of a box and bolt on I woulde look at the Dart Brodix or AFR 227 heads on a side note the Afr I here take off set rocker arms.

The engine i talked about earlier would probably made close to 600 hp with 230 cc 23 deg heads and more cam but your moving the torque peak up and its not going to be as drivable at low engine speed. It just depends on what you want.
