I am in teh process of restoring my 70SS and it came without the stripe package.I really like the stripes on Chevelles my question is would the car be worth less with them on it since the car is a # matching Canadian car that only 318 were built?:)

If you have the build sheet and its a strip delete and your doing the correct restoration on the car dont paint the stripes on it.

If you dont care and want to build it the way you want than paint the stripes on it.
A stripe delets car I dont think is a rare breed I have seen a few of them here.

The D88 was included with the cowl induction hood option ZL2. It was an extra cost option on all other SS cars.

So, I would say there were far more SS Chevelle's without D88. The 318 number is not of all Chevelle production, only what plant built it.

I personally did not want any stripes on my 1970 SS 454, I did not want to draw the attention to me they would. If I would have known then about the stripe delete, I probably would have had the Cowl Induction hood but at the time, white stripes turned me off. Never got a speeding ticket or was ever pulled over with my SS 454 either. A buddy had a 71 in Copper with white stripes, constantly stopped by the cops. He use to say he should have never ordered them, all the cops knew his car from a mile away and eyes were on him. Of course he gave them reason.

I agree with Brad. If you aren't worried about correctness or future buyers asking why, then do what makes you happy. I am a purist, so I like originality.
When I see a car for sale that has been changed, modified, altered, etc., it makes me wonder what else isn't correct.

This stripe delete was bid up to $90,000 at Mecums auction last June, and he turned it down, I think the part that it was stripe delete on the build sheet, helped it go that high, maybe.

When I ordered my SS 454, No Cowl Hood.--No Stripes. or pay extra to get them. 37 years later, No Stripes. And No Buckets,No Gauges,No F-41- But it has A/C--AM/FM--P. Windows--Rem. Mirror--Aux Lighting--V-Top--P steering & Brakes--M-22--CRV rear. A black El Camino with white stripes would look kinda " Skunky " Bob

Here are some numbers. In '70 there were 53,599 with the SS396 option and 8,773 with the SS454 option for a total of 62,372 SS's. Stripes were not included in either SS option. 28,888 were ordered with cowl induction which included the stripes, but could be ordered stripe delete. The stripes could be ordered by themselves and 10,651 were for a maximum of 39,539 with stripes. Since there were some cowl induction cars ordered with stripe delete, we know the actual number was less. So we know the number of '70 SS cars without stripes was something over 22,833. Not all that rare. Probably a lot of those that survived had stripes added somewhere along the line though.
