Friday night April 27th- Evergreen speedway in monroe is having their 1/8th mile street drag (basically just a TNT from what i've heard).

Anybody want to come up(or down) and go?

This will be my maiden run for racing my 68 454 elk... No idea what times I'm hoping for as I've never in in a 1/8th mile before...

Hoping for high to mid 13's when I eventually take it down to the 1/4 at pacific... Anyone know what that equates to in the 1/8th?

What time are they starting Ben?

That would force me to replace my bungee cord battery hold down and add a catch can for my overflow... Not that those are bad things! :D

Might be a little far for me to travel without a trailer. If I can arrange something I might give it a shot.

Ben,

I'm motivated by you taking your car to Monroe on the 27th! Good for you!

The trade with Darryl for other BBC goodies could be this weekend..... Local Gearhead Rick Classen is excited for me getting the 454 crank from Mike and the other stuff from Darryl. We're plotting your eventual demise at Pacific Raceways this summer. He's well briefed on my self-imposed restrictions; low-cost, 'streetable'/good manners, fair-good mpg. This is my daily driver after all!!!!! We're talking something like a 1970 LS-5 but with a modern big cam (with a .540" lift limit, the size of your ext lobe), Perf RPM A-G intake, my 1968 oval port closed chamber heads, and a very modest carb that started out as a 3310 Holley. I'll have about 10.3:1 CR with those low-dome Hyper-Es from Darryl mated to my 101cc heads. See? No big cam, no fancy parts...just a solid engine like I wanted to build for you. AND, I'm working things so I do not need a high stall torque converter....against my 'good mpg' clause. Believe me, I'm in no way considering your Elky/454 and easy mark, far from it. I'm strictly out for fun here...hope you are too. You have the upper hand with your engine already in the car....the advantage of having a crate engine!!!! You are already experimenting with your Elky too.

I'll not throw the engine together in a week or two. But "soon" happens much faster when all the parts are present! Rick is pretty darn certain that my suspension (or yours) will be the deciding factor. I gotta do my gears too. Rick is saying "Smoke 'em" will be very easy.....

I'm doing homework with Junior then out to the garage to replace the ELKY's rt rear wheel cylinder.....major seepage. Time permitting, I'll replace the dvr side tonight also. If not tonight, certainly by the weekend....

Do check thy brakes thoroughly before playing too hard with the Elky.

I need to see if I'll have the car together. Just getting ready to do the rear disc conversion, and hopefully the stage II kit. Once I get everything situated, I'll see if it's road worthy.:D

RAMBO
Apr 12th, 07, 3:28 PM
Well, i still havn't done anything with my rear suspension, and won't have time before the run, but sometime this summer it will get updated.

Basically i'm just looking to get out and see what she'll do for a baseline run without much tuning time....

I need to hustle up a catch can and fab up a battery hold down before i get up there... Might have to order one of those ugly drive shaft loops from summit or Jegs too.

I'm not worried about the brakes, its all brand new stuff, replaced last spring- but i would like to get my 3point belts installed before i run too...

guess i need to make a short to-do list for the next 2 weeks.

:-)

I smell an Elky grudge match comin'. It seems that Shelton has a couple of TNT sessions and is closer to me than Bremerton and PIR. Might have to run up there.

All you guys are making me think that I gotta go faster. Where did I put that Summit cataloge.....................................

Mark, the Shelton track just re opened last year and it's a cool place to race, just hope they have there timming equipment fixed for this year. Ben, call me if you need any help working on your elcamino. Work has been crazy for me and I have not gotten anything done on the cars, but my heater motor switch just got here today! I'll have heat now.

Mark,

Yes, friendly grudge race between myself and AHSUM Ben. This has been in the works since Ben bought that 454 HO crate engine. I've imposed a bunch of restrictions on cost, parts used, etc....just a nice, solid street performer. I could make a stone-cold screamer but I have to keep expenses down and the 454 tame enough to where excursions to Everett or Bothell won't require a Second Mortgage. I'll have the new gears and posi (3.42 looks like) in the car, break them in heading up to the Smokey Point ACES show 20 May. My current 350 is begging for a quicker gearset, relief from the 2.5 freeking 6 set I have. I plan to come up SAT afternoon, hang with Ben and the other street thugs, cruise. Might even attend the Sat Eve BBQ for the show or hang with pal Darryl in Arlington. Might end up swapping my BBC parts in Arlington for Darryl's BBC parts.

Ben,

Yes, get some good baseline numbers. Get some launching technique practice. You asked about what is a low 13 sec 1/4 mile time comperable to at a 1/8 mile track. Here ya go:
1/8 mile 8.471 = 1/4 mile 13.30
http://www.fastnuf.com/QMC.html so you have this for reference/play.
A 13.30 is a very nice time for a mostly street/cruiser car. Should my 70 Elky go faster than this with my mild 454, mild 3.42 future gears, street tires, I'd fall over with happiness!

In case you've not figured it out yet, a mild 350 in an Elky at the drags IS like getting on the freeway onramp. That healthy 454 you have will be a whole new animal.

LOL... I've had the 454 in there for about 8 months now... you think I havn't "Launched" on a freeway onramp at the metering tree yet?

I guess since i had all those tuning problems last fall, i've never really given you my full :D :D :D from roasting tires and launching.... Suffice to say, it definitely puts a :D on my face. ESPECIALLY now that i get that posi Kick to the side when i launch :D

I hope to get a few runs in so i can work out the best launch technique... I have a feeling that i'll be required to do rolling starts if i want to avoid going up in smoke each time- but thats the fun in trying.

I need to get ahold of Daryl and find out the details of time/price etc for running up there.

Hopefully it is just like a big Test&Tune so there will be lots of runs, and not like SIR where you have to wait for each "group" to run through...

Ben,

I'd figured correctly....you've been out doing some back-street testing!
Good idea. Also good idea to make one circuit for spying Law Enforcement or road hazards before doing testing.

I'm confident that your Elky and mine for that matter should run in the 13.20-13.30 category once sorted out. Perhaps better. I can't wait for the weather to change to Summer here.

Darryl went to the Portland Swapmeet early today. I suppose next weekend or two I'll drive up there and swap 454 stuff and begin to buy/order stuff and get stuff done in prep for building the Budget 454.

I might have a line on a trailer that a fellow gearhead is willing to let me borrow so I may be in for the 27th and maybe some other weekends at Bremerton/PIR. I would also really like to run at Shelton, just to say I did it. I've never run an eighth before so that will be a new one on me. Anyone going to Monroe?

Dave
Apr 14th, 07, 1:04 AM
Like I do, just spend the 50.00, once or twice a year on a U-haul. An extra 10.00 bucks, and if anything goes wrong, I can just walk away.

here are the details on monroe i got from my contact...

Gates open 5:00-5:30 (5:30 but they normally open a few minutes early)

Tomorrow is racing there and I'll be running the welfare nova and my buddy is taking out his 67 camaro with a nasty 540 in it for a shake down.

Safety is common sense 9yes catch can and battery hold down). If it's legal for Pacific it will easily pass here.

Well, the thought of going up there ZFriday has inspired me to buy a battery holddown, an overflow catch can, and a dual throttle return spring... Now I just have to install them. :D

Does anyone know if my stainless braided fuel line from the mech pump to the carb is permitted? Also, I'm running a glass fuel filter. Are these tech issues???

Thanks!

Dave
Apr 26th, 07, 12:58 AM
There's a limit to how much rubberhose you can have in the fuel line, if you got braided rubber hose, I think that's OK. Not sure about the fuel filter. From what I understand, tech is fairly slack at this track. If your not a HIGH SPEED all out racer, I think they just check too see if you are safe enough, that your car ain't gonna fall to pieces halfway down the track.

I'm hoping to make it, but I've been down with the crud for the last 5 day's. today's the first day I even got outta bed before noon.

To prove my point, car's been sitting out in the garage on jackstands, halfway through my rear disc conversion, with a ton of unopened Summit boxes stacked on the counter. I know I'm sick, when I can't even open a Summit box.:D

I plan on taking the Welfare nova out again Tomorrow. Hopefully weather holds.
Owen, who runs the drags, is usually there early so 5:00-5:30 will easily get you in the back gate.

13.30's would likely put you in Bracket 3 or 4. Saw a guy with bracket 4 on his window and a Pacific raceway dial in of 12.70 in the 1/4. Bracket 4 I believe is 7.50-7.99 in the 1/8th. Monroe, even with worse traction, is about 2-3 tenths faster than a true 1/8 mile at pacific. I'm pretty sure it's short 60 plus feet.

Good news, I told George and few others my 427 powered 69 chevelle got selected for a photo shoot to be in Randy's Ring and Pinion Calender. It's pretty photogenic but it's no show car. The paint is 18 years old now so the term "show quality" isn't there. The Shoot is the weekend after the Smokey point car show.

I should be able to show my 68 chevelle at the Smokey point show as the vinal top goes on next week followed by the windshield. Then it's done, for now. I was able to get all the chrome back on and it's looking sweet. Almost to nice for a knucklehead like me.

I should have went as well. I was ready to go and even called Owen, the guy that runs the 1/8 mile drags. I Had a few reports of rain from friends at different locations and decided to bail. Wish I had gone now. I heard the racing was fine. Car was loaded and ready.

Pete, good to see your ride into the 7's. I expect you'll drop it into bracket 5 which is 7.0-7.49 with some traction. A 295/50/15 drag radial would work nicely. Plus WD40 the Front sway bar bolts at the a-arms so you can remove them. A little pre prep will have them ready to undo them at the track. It really helps free the car up and transfer weight. If you splurge for some cheapy Summit 3 way adjustable shocks, for the front, you can set them at 90/10 fro drag and 50/50 for cruise. That's what i have on both my chevelle and Nova. Of course set on 90/10 on both.

Sure is nice today, wish it would have been more like this yesterday.

Sorry to mish you guys that went. I would have really liked to meet you all.

Hey Pete sorry I missed your call. I thought I was going to have Friday off to work on the Buick but ended up having to work.

I did install the Summit catch tank, a double return spring, and the battery has a new tray and is bolted in rather than bungee'd.

I finished up around 6:00 and looked towards Monroe... hmmm.. those look like rain clouds... I decided not to chance it since I haven't figured out how to get the wipers to work yet (and yes smart asses I've already tried the knob on the dash! :D )

I'm glad to hear you had a tire smoking good time, sorry I missed it!

When's the next one???

Ben you are welcome anytime that you want to ride along.

Helmet? I would have shown up with out one for sure. I'll have to dig my old bike helmet out.. I think its an old Bell M85, do they check them?
Also, do you need a fire extinguisher on board?

May 4th, 18th, 25th
June 8th, 15th, 22nd
July 6th, 20th
August 10, 17
Sept 7th, 28th

Helmet checks, not that I have seen. No fire extinguisher needed. It's not NHRA and only 1/8 mile so many of the picky rules you's see at Pacific don't get a lot of attention. Just common sense: The double spring on the carb, that's common sense but would be enforced anyways.
