I just had a local body shop (highly recommended) put the stripes on my 72 SS. I gave them the year one stencil kit and dropped off the car. Well I picked it up and WOW what a mess. The paint bled under some of the tape (stencils) I asked him if he was going to fix it. He said it was a poor stencil kit and that is why the paint bled. Without me paying more that was all he was going to do. I did not want to fight (I tend to kick ass when I'm pissed) so I just took the car home. Any suggestions on cleaning up the stripe edges ? Can I color sand to the under paint clear and then polish or should I even worry about it. My friend says no facory stripes were perfect ????
Help !!!

There's NO reason to have the paint bleed under the tape. If you simply run you finger around all the edges a few times then shoot it they should have no problems. You didn't say what type of paint they used.(or maybe I didn't understand what you meant about sanding the clear) but if it was B/C it would be difficult to fix cause it's buried in the clear. They should have fixed it when paint was still soft. They also should have taken the tape off with the paint still soft to avoid bleeding...Is it a base/clear paint or single stage on top of the paint???

It is a Dupont base/clear. I had the stripes put on about a month after the car was painted. The question I was asking is can I sand the stripe edge down to the clear on the paint underneath and polish it ?? I don't know if that makes sense but thanks for any help.

If the stripes are on top of the clear you should be able to carefully wet sand the excess off with 1500 and 2000 grit paper. Get most of it with 1500 and finish up with 2000. Use a small rubber block and stop often to check progress by wiping it dry with a towel. After the excess paint is gone, bring back the gloss by hand polishing with 3M Finesse It II. Be careful not to polish away the stripe paint. Then go back and kick the body shop guy's a$$! No excuse for a crappy job they refuse to make right.

To add to what Von suggested. You can put 1/4 fine line tape on the edges of the stripes so when your sanding you won't sand the stripe just the part that bled under the stencil...
What I was asking earlier was, did they clear over the stripes or did they paint the stripes on top of the clear and leave it.....
