: I need some professional input., well at least some experiance, about my hood
Bad Rat 414 Jul 1st, 04, 8:58 PM I'm looking to redesign my hood. I just bought a new SS hood and it won't clear my Air Gap intake. What should the steps be to make this change? I want to open up the underside center of the hood enough to clear the air cleaner. Then fill in the top. I made this picture with paint shop. What do you guys think.

Bad Rat 414 Jul 2nd, 04, 1:01 PM Anybody???????
Neal Wright Jul 2nd, 04, 2:26 PM For whatever my opinion counts I think it looks really cool!! Might even be able to open up the side vents to some "fresh air".
Just make sure and re-brace the undersize so that nothing buckles ... other than that, others will have to help you with how.
Again, looks really cool though:)
Bad Rat 414 Jul 2nd, 04, 5:52 PM The biggest problem is going to be getting the front slope bent right. graemlins/clonk.gif
loader1 Jul 2nd, 04, 8:25 PM We have the same car. Over the winter purchased a 4 bolt 396, that i had rebuilt and wanted to use an air gap intake at the recommendation of my engine builder. Every place that i looked said that it would not fit under the stock 67SS hood. Well, mine does fit. The only thing is, that since I had the nose off to do some other work I decided to put new body mounts in. So since mine fit and doesn't hit, even with the engine running at idle where it jumps around pretty good (Gm 3863143 solid cam 11-1 cr), I have wondered if I just got lucky by putting the bushings in at the same time. Also I am using the stock drop down type air cleaner. I have 179 digital camera photos on my computer that i can't send you because I haven't taken the time to figure that out yet and can't slow one of the kids down long enough to do it for me. So, not sure but maybe something to think about. Sorry to hear of your trouble. Your solution is one that was crossing my mind, looks cool! Good luck Mike
Bad Rat 414 Jul 3rd, 04, 9:55 AM I'm running solid motor mounts that might be raising it up some, but the headers are barely touching the frame if I use lower mounts the headers will need to be dented.
sevt_chevelle Jul 3rd, 04, 11:14 AM To me it seems like a TON of work just to make an air cleaner fit!!!
How about dropping the air cleaner? Cut out the base and drop it even more then stock.
This is just my opinion, yeah that hood idea is different and has started to grow on me but do you have the tools, knowledge to pull it off?
Bad Rat 414 Jul 3rd, 04, 2:00 PM I'm already running a dropped air cleaner. I've got a welder, die grinders, bondo, sanders, etc. Nerves, I'm a little short of. I scared of cutting into a new hood. I've got the old hood so I'm starting a mock up on that one.
loader1 Jul 3rd, 04, 11:08 PM Calm down, you can do it. Judging by the work you've already done, this will be minor. I contemplated having to do exactly the same thing. I think you might have mistook me, I have thought that maybe when I put new body mount bushings in my car, it raised it enough to make the intake not hit the hood. My bushings were very flat, and to me the body sits noticably higher on the frame. I think that you can see my car now in my signature and you'll see what I meant by "we have the same car". I had even thought about getting the cowl hood from G/U and putting the inserts into it, if my hood hit. Good luck Mike

You've got mail.

67shovel Jul 8th, 04, 8:34 AM Check the fit of your new hood before modifing it. Those 67 aftermarket hoods have a bad rap of not fitting right............just ask me.

I posted this last week. You'll save yourself a lot of work.
Bad Rat 414 Jul 8th, 04, 12:25 PM The fit of the hood is fine. Herb, I'm not sure what your link is refering to. It has nothing to do with modifing my hood.
Herb Jul 21st, 04, 11:21 AM Sorry Bad Rat,
Thought you were modding your hood to accomodate the Air Gap manifold soley for performance gain reasons.
The link was about an a article on tests of the AIr Gap vs RPM manifold and shows that unless you're racing and running in the 7000 rpm range, there's not much / any advantage to the running an Air Gap manifold over the RPM. I just was just thinking that if you used the RPM you'd get nearly the same performance without the need to mod the hood.
chev65elleSS Jul 21st, 04, 11:32 AM Why don't you just get a thinner air filter?
