: 70 mis-identification
stroobydoo Apr 7th, 07, 10:44 PM I was out with the Chevelle the other day when we actually had some nice weather and I stopped at the 7-11 for a Coke. It must have been lunch time for the local high school cause there were some students there. Anyway, on my way back to the car one of the boys pointed at the Chevelle and said to a girl "That's my favorite car, a 69 SS Camaro". I turned to him and said that it's a 70 Chevelle to which he replied "a 70?". My wife said that I was mean to shoot him down in front of the girl. I told her I was trying to educate the boy so he knows the difference.
MEJ1990TM Apr 7th, 07, 10:50 PM A person that used to go to school with me asked my dad if that was a Malibu or a Nova. He just said it was a '70 SS. I guess it happens.
Old, fat, bald guy Apr 7th, 07, 10:53 PM if he can't tell the difference between a camaro and a chevelle, he should be embarrassed in front of his girl friend ........ now maybe she'll try to find someone smarter that can support himself in the future rather than working minimum wage jobs his whole life :D
furball8994 Apr 7th, 07, 10:56 PM I know the feeling Doug. I don't know how many times at car shows, I've been asked by people (mostly 40 to 60ish) what year my Camaro or Nova is. I say "It's a 69 Chevelle. The usual response is "Oh, that's a Chevelle?
T-Man Apr 7th, 07, 10:57 PM I think you did the right thing, you have to take misinformation and nip it in the bud. Nip it, nip it, nip it. :D
Did you scare that boy, Doug?
quikss Apr 7th, 07, 11:10 PM I showed my bosses wife pictures of my 69 chevelle the other day and she made the comment "nice Nova". She drives a cadillac and a mercedes so I know it took a lot for her to say anything other than bad about my old car. I just said thank you, and moved on. My partner said "aren't you going to tell her?" and I said sometimes you just have to know a compliment when you hear one.

prefectca Apr 8th, 07, 11:30 AM Reminds me of last summer when I was at a red light behind a beautifully restord MGTC. A couple were crossing the street and she said "Wow what a nice old car", and he said "Oh it's just one of those VW kit cars". I can't repeat here what the driver of the MG said!http://bestsmileys.com/hitting/11.gif
Derek69SS Apr 8th, 07, 11:50 AM Depends on the situation, whether I'll correct someone or not... if they're talking like they know it all, and/or are trying to impress someone, I'll go out of my way to embarass them in front of their friends. :D If it's obvious that they aren't trying to impress anyone, and just are acknowledging that they like the car, I'll let it slide, or tell them nicely what it is.
dscabra Apr 8th, 07, 3:22 PM I take my El Camino to our local cruise-in a couple times a year when the summer nights are good and warm. Last year, they were having a big event, so my wife decides to bring her Mercedes-Benz CLK-430 and parks it next to me. (The car is really pretty, and got a lot of attention from the ladies in the crowd by the way). This one guy comes up acting cool and asks her what year the 320 is? She responded nicely with a comment that it was actually a 430. The guy snapped back with "You win." and walked off. My wife asked what she did wrong -- I just laughed and told her how she just deflated his ego a few pounds by being corrected on a car question by a woman. She just chuckled and said, “If he can’t he tell the difference between a V-6 and a V-8, he should have stayed home.”
1970SS502 Apr 8th, 07, 6:34 PM It's funny how many experts there are. I have the 502 badges under my SS fender emblems. Last couple of shows I was at there has been that Mr. Knowitall that points out "That's one of them really rare SS 502 cars". I said the same thing to them both "Yep, it's so rare that they even put a Ford rearend under it"...one guy actually said that he knew that!

Did you scare that boy, Doug?
I don't think I scared him, Tom. I just think he was a little confused and embarrased.
T-Man Apr 8th, 07, 8:56 PM Good enough.
70malibumikey Apr 8th, 07, 10:12 PM last week i had my 70 out and this kid walks up to me and says "nice 68 nova", so tryin not to be a jerk i said its a 70 chevelle, he laughs and says "i know my cars, its a nova man" and then walks away. it kinda makes me laugh, but i know i could tell the difference between a chevelle and a nova by the time i was 10
mike67sd Apr 8th, 07, 10:24 PM I get a lot of questions about my Beaumont, but not many try to identify what it is if theyre not sure. My favourite was one guy who asked ( me with the hood open) if it was big block or small block. I kinda laughed and politely replied " big block" and he says " 327, huh?" I said "I have to go now"
Derek69SS Apr 8th, 07, 10:31 PM last week i had my 70 out and this kid walks up to me and says "nice 68 nova", so tryin not to be a jerk i said its a 70 chevelle, he laughs and says "i know my cars, its a nova man" and then walks away.I always laugh when someone tries argue with the owner of the car about things like this... as if the guy who owns it wouldn't know. :clonk:
53Chev Apr 8th, 07, 10:40 PM I had one guy try to tell me that my car was a 1967 Pontiac 442. I replied "its a 71 Chevelle"....to which he replied "I used to own a 71 chevelle and THAT is not a chevelle"...I then proceeded to show him my ownership from my wallet that had the year make and model on it...he shrugged and said "you must have forged the ownership"..then he walks away. This is the same guy a week before came up to me and said "your car is running like **** man.....why is it running so rough?".....I told him that it was supposed to run that way because of the compression, etc. He said "oh.....then you should get the timing fixed.....they sell them thar things at canadian tire....its a bolt on afair isnt it?".....I just gave up and nodded in agreement.
Some people are such dumbasses.
MEJ1990TM Apr 8th, 07, 11:42 PM Confusing a 4-4-2 with a Chevelle wouldn't be too terribly bad. I saw an oldsmobile from the side that I thought for a split second looked like a Chevelle. But don't worry I quickly realized what it was. :p But saying a Pontiac 4-4-2? And then not realizing he was wrong to begine with. That is just sad.
When we were hauling my dads Chevelle back from Arizona. A guy at a gas station said he knew where two '70 Chevelles were. But then he asked if my dads was a '68.
67 GTO Apr 8th, 07, 11:59 PM and said to a girl "That's my favorite car, a 69 SS Camaro".
Sounds like a poser. As it is his favorite car, he clearly deserved it - and more.
But if he makes a mistake like that in front of his GF...
webfoot Apr 9th, 07, 6:59 AM Last month I drove through town and a kid from the street shouted "nice car, chevelle?" I said "yep", he said "68?" I said "no, a '70". Next time around not more than 2 hours later I was driving through the same stretch of town, this time in a parade, the very same kid asks the same question, only this time he asked if it was a "63".
I think the new craze of these kids having the big shaggy hair is covering their ears up too much to hear worth a damn.
MEJ1990TM Apr 9th, 07, 7:44 AM Or maybe it's the weed making their memory bad. :p
Robinls5 Apr 9th, 07, 10:49 AM You do not know what fun is untill you build a SS 454, domed hood, black stripes, green 70 SS dash, buckets, 70 SS wheels, very correct and detailed LS-5 engine compartment Red paint. Hidden wipers. AM/FM, A/C,and SS logo steering wheel, Wheel house trim. Yes it started life as a 70 Nomad 307 wagon. After talking to some people, and hearing thier comments WOW !! Some are so funny, They would bring a tear to a glass eye !!!!! Bob ACES--AACA

I love your wagon...that thing is awesome. Makes me want to get one so bad it hurts. Very nice DRIVER! I WISH my driver was that nice.
mike69ss Apr 9th, 07, 11:00 AM Don’t be too hard on the kid. We may take for granted how easy it is to identify a Chevelle. It was about two years ago that I was at a local Chevy dealer. The owner of the dealership came out and asked what my Chevelle was. I remember thinking how can a person who owns a Chevy dealership not know a Chevelle when he sees one, but old cars (even Chevys) were not on his radar screen.
Olle Apr 9th, 07, 11:01 AM A paint job like this takes all the guesswork out of it.

mike69ss Apr 9th, 07, 2:49 PM WOW ! That's quite the paint job. Looks like a sign behind the car. Spot must be for clown car parking only.

He may know his cars, but knows squat about yours!

ken70ss396 Apr 9th, 07, 6:57 PM I've seen those wheels on an episode of Bonanza, the one where "Hoss" had to put a new metal band on one!
Rick_Nelson Apr 9th, 07, 10:42 PM I was out driving my triple black '68 SS427 Impala around one day. In small letters on the rear side windows it says. "For Sale". While driving through a home construction site, I drove by a bunch of guys who were getting ready to leave the site. One of them stops me to admire the car. He asks how much and I told him a price (very expensive). He wants to see more and I told him to follow me to the shop where I can let him go completely through the car. After checking it over pretty well and still not flinching at the price he comments that it is one of the best '66 Chevelle SS396's he has ever seen.........................I proceded to shut the hood and tell him that thanks to him, I think I will keep my car for awhile. Can you see the resemblence?
Rick

But a 67 with a 71??? even a pothead shouldn't make that mistake.

I believe I've seen your car. definately can't mistake the 2 (let alone the extra football field for length:) )
Bowtie-72 Apr 10th, 07, 1:06 PM I love when the girls know what they're talking about.
A buddy and I were at Brainerd Raceway years ago walking through the pits. He was commenting about some of the cars, and she said she liked the pretty orange camaro. He said "yeah, it's a SS396, looks pretty cool with that color". Then she says is it a 350 or 375 horse? He stops, looks at her and says "if you can tell me the name of the color, I'll do you right here in the dirt". She says Hugger Orange, let's wait until there's less kids walking around honey, then starts walking again.
He just stood there jaw open and dumbfounded, and yes, they snuck away from the campground that night.

So true!

I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE BEAT THE CHEVELLE OUT OF HIM.

I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE BEAT THE CHEVELLE OUT OF HIM.
You really should beat the Ford'ing Chevette out of him. Get your swears in order before you find yourself in deep Subaru.
Junkyard Dawg Apr 11th, 07, 8:06 PM Chevelles are mistaken for Novas, Chevy II's are mistaken for Falcons, Regals are mistaken for Cutlasses or Monte Carlos.....
The same people probably don't even know what ignition points are....
Not everyone knows their cars at first glance.....
Tyroma Apr 11th, 07, 9:43 PM Great thread....
I've got an addition....I had a 1968 GTO with the hideaway headlights in Carousel Red (aka Hugger Orange). Had to correct people on a daily basis that it was a GTO and NOT a Charger....A CHARGER!?! Even overheard a guy at a show say to his girlfriend "look! It's the General Lee!" Arg!
I am sure with my new 1973, everyone will mistake it for a Monte, Olds, Buick, Cordoba...etc...
