I know this may sound dumb but what do you look for to see if it is for a bucket seat and a consol for a 66 Chevelle. The reason why I ask I have been seeing them for sale on eBay and they go for a lot of money. And when I go to Carlisle in a couple of weeks I do not want to be swindle out of a lot of money. I have trouble believing some people when you ask them for what it fits :beers:

I'm assuming you are talking about the gate mechanism & linkage. The gate & linkage are the same regardless of console....they may even be the same for Chevelle, Impala, Camaro, etc.....not sure of that. The reproduction stuff that you see in the catalogs is pretty accurate as far as appearance. Take a catalog with you.

I had a factory muncie shifter in my former '67 Firebird. It had "MUNCIE" etched in the shifter just above the shifter boot. I'm not sure if they did that on all of their factory shifters or not but it may be something to look for.

The mechanism is the same for 64-67 Chevelle, Impala, Nova (65-67). That's where the similarities end. The rods are different for Impala (longer) and Nova (shorter). They are also different for Muncie vs. Saginaw on all three cars. The Nova requires two mounting bushings, the Chevelle does not require a mounting plate, the Impala requires a special mounting plate. The handles are different for Nova Chevelle and Impala. They are also different for Bench seat and Console shift. There are other GM products that use a similar shifter, Olds and Buick each with it's own unique shift handles. The Camaro is different again even the mechanism. In 68 Nova started useing the same style as the 67 and up Camaro shifter. None of this stuff is the same as Chevelle. Corvette is completely different again and has unique rods mechanism and levers. There is one ebay seller that has a good reputation (undeserved) that contiues to sell Chevelle handle and mechanism with Corvette linkage, that kind of misrepresentation is dirty.

Don't get me started on how shi..er.. crappy the reproduction stuff is. It is poorly made, has a tiny set screw to hold the shifter in place (instead of a woodruff key) has the wrong levers (442 style) and the wrong hardware. It is expensive and you will be pissed off at its performance. In my opinion, if you don't have the stock GM stuff, use a Hurst.

The levers come in two styles. Single rod hole for 64-65 and two rod hole positions for later 65-67. this allows you to have longer or shorter throw shifting at your preference.

Since you asked about 1966 Chevelle (my favorite) here is a picture of the handles for 64-67 Chevelle Bench on the left, 64-66 in middle (console) 67 console on right. Also a picture of two sets of linkage (so you can see the angles) and the levers. This linkage is for Chevelle, Muncie only, Bench and Console are the same.

Mark's idea of taking a catalog to a swap meet is a good one. I use it to identify pulleys and brackets. It would also work for linkage and handles as the shapes are very similar.
