: Cranberry Red, where did the name come from?

I've got a 70 SS454 that I want to have painted and was wondering where the name for paint code 75 came from. If you look here at TC in the paint code section for 1970 and scroll down and look at the chart which appears to be the real deal, the name for #75 is simply "red". Was the name Cranberry Red, which is so widely used, made up or is it the actual name from the factory? Can anyone verify that it was used, say, on the original window sticker. How does the painter I select match a paint to this code #75?

Now about the stripes. My car which I believe has only been painted one time has white stripes. Most of the "red" cars out there have black stripes. I know when I strip the car down, I should be able to tell what the original color of the stripes was. I have documentation from GM of Canada and know the car had stripes, just not what color. Did the coupes without a white vinyl or convertible top come with white stripes? The car was built Jan, 12, 1970 what are the dimensions for the width and where are the measurements taken? I know this may be alot to ask but maybe someone knows.

OK so nobody knows about the paint names. How do I get that original color when painting my car?

Your painter will have the paint shop look up the blend for that color by the paint # 75 for the ' 70 model run. He will then mix it up by using different pigments. All the books have it called by Cranberry Red, code #75. By your build date, you should have the early design stripes . The main stripe is wider, almost everything else is the same. Does the car have a vinyl top?

No Doug, it doesn't have a vinyl top. I just read somewhere that white stripes came on cars with white vinyl or conv. top. As I posted earlier, I'm sure when the stripping process begins, I'll be able to tell if the stripes were white or black. Thanks RC

RC 70: If you have a Barnes & Noble Book Store near you go in & look thru the Chevelle SS Restoration Guide ( has a red 71 conv. on cover )Barnes & Noble here doesn,t mind browsing. Look on pg.140 it has info on width, length, gap & centering dim., but no color. I do know some of the facts in this book are incorrect however there is a lot of good info in it also.

RC,
Don't know about 1970, but I have a 1971 Dealer brochure and on the back page where they list the colors, one of the choices is "Cranberry Red" I guess the color name inventor at GM must have liked Cranberries !

I got it, one of the older G.M. engineers had a urination problem, and the Dr's prescribed cranberry juice everyday. Upon drinking this for several years, he thought
Hmmm......wonder what the new 1970 Chevelle would look like in a Cranberry Red color, and the idea was born! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Sounds good....er..or bad what ever your age group is ,that is!

I really have no idea.

Actually that same color has a few different names. When I bought it for my 70 SS396 it came up on the paint stores computer as Fire Red, another time I bought it and it was labeled Bright Red. The same color was also used in the mid seventies on some Chevy and GMC trucks.
Remember "a rose by any other name------.

Funny thing is that cars all come in the most ridiculous color names......
Example:
Ford...Toreador Red.....uh huh..sure bullfighters, yep thats what I think of when I see a red Explorer

Chevy....Galaxy Silver.....yep that chevy Impala is a real astronomical wonder, soar

Chrysler...patriot blue...oh I feel so patriotic because I chose blue on my Grand Cherokee.......

Auto manufacturers choose silly names for every color....in fact the Dodge Grand Caravan comes in Cranberry Pearlcoat...ford has a couple of Wedgewood Blues(what the hell is a wedgewood anyway?).......I just think its funny.........WHAT ABOUT "ASTRO VENTILATION ON EARLY CHEVY'S?...isn't that silly as all hell?
