I just had to buy a ticket to Sydney, Australia for a business trip I'm taking. Business class seat from Denver to Sydney and back -- $11,105.00. All totaled for a one-week trip I'll spend close to $15,000.00 for air, hotel, car, and meals. Insane!

That's pretty expensive for a plane ticket. I went there once courtesy of Uncle Sam.

dang. should have booked an economy ticket, upgraded to business class with mileage (if you have any), and pocketed the extra $10K :D .

That's a hefty fare!

what are you flying, bend over and break it off airline?

I just searched Orbitz for a flight to Sydney from Denver for a week and the average cost was around $2500.00 some lower in the $1700.00 range and some higher in the $3000.00 range. How many people are you flying over there 4 or 5.

The reason this post caught my eye is my wife and I and my son are planing a trip there.

Same here! Told my wife what it was like down there and she has always wanted to go someday. Oh well, maybe she can use my life insurance money when I'm gone!:D

You missed the "business class" part...:)

Exactly -- my employer flies me business class if the flight is more than 12 hours. This trip from Denver is 2-1/2 to San Fransisco, and then 14 more to Sydney. If they told me to fly in coach, I'd be staying home! I checked Orbitz for a business class ticket, and could have done it for about $7,000.00 on some airline I've never heard of with multiple stops along the way. That is not an option for me, as I am required to fly on a U.S. flagged carrier unless my destination is not serviced by any U.S. flagged carrier. I'm actually traveling on from Sydney to Canberra, and will be using Quantas for that leg -- another $350.00 round trip, and that is in coach for a 50 minute flight.

United requires 90,000 miles each way to upgrade from economy to business class, and that's if you buy an "upgradable" economy ticket that costs around $7,000.00.

I don't get the business class thing. I just pluged in Denver to Sydney with a week stay and came up with those numbers. And that was all with big name airlines. Thats just freekin nuts to pay that kind of money for a ticket to Sydney.

Two questions for you (and I'm not trying to be smart with you):

1. How old are you (just a ball park figure)?
2. Have you ever flown business or first class on an long flight before?

I can't take economy seating for much over 6-7 hours without beginning to feel some real pain. I did many long trips in my "younger" years with no ill effects, but as I got older, that changed. If I were given a free trip to Australia in economy, I'd probably turn it down. Thankfully, my employer is sending me business class. It's just too far to travel for me otherwise. I leave Denver at 5:30 PM on Friday, and will arrive in Canberra on Sunday at around 12:00 PM. It will be about 28-30 actual hours from the time I leave home until I arrive at my hotel in Canberra.

I work for a small company -- no corporate card. I have a United Mileage Visa card that I use for business travel. My company reimburses me as soon as I buy my tickets, and then we settle up the rest of the bill after I get back. I travel quite a bit, so using the Mileage Visa lets me earn extra miles that I can use for fun stuff. I was able to buy my entire family's airline tickets for our vacation we are taking this summer to Hawaii. My hotel points I earn on business travel will pay for most of our hotel cost at the Hilton! Plus I get discounted rental car rates -- $360.00 for a convertable in Hawaii for a week.

Should have taken Greyhound... ;)
Headed for Rome-Naples-Bilbao next Sunday..for business and in business class.
Is nice when the business travel is for the same airline as the one I'll be flying on...

I can't take economy seating for much over 6-7 hours without beginning to feel some real pain.

That's exactly why I don't fly to the UK where there is business for me to be done. I told my manager I just can't sit in any class of seating for more than six hours. Too painful on me physically (and I'm only 30 yrs. old). Only way I'll fly to UK is if I fly to the East coast, do and audit for a few days, then fly to the UK. I know East coast to UK is longer than six hours, but I needed to meet half-way with my manager on the issue. But, I don't have a Passport so I'm stuck in the 50-states. Fine by me :)

I don't need to ballpark, I'm 51 years old, And have flown out of the country.

You know what they say about opinions, my opinion is still you got to be freekin nuts to pay that kind of money to fly to Sydney. But thats just my personal opinion.

I don't disagree that the cost is ridiculous (see my opening post). I just found myself trying to defend (not that I need to) why I am flying business class vs. economy. I'm sure that when asked, most people would choose not to fly in economy if someone else was paying their way and was willing to spend the extra money for business or first class service.

Peace. :)
