There was no rule of thumb what was written on the firewall in grease pencil. If there is not to many coats of paint over it you should be able to see it. Mine you could see L-34 ZL3 and the last five #s of the vin. Pick a few things of the sheet you like and go with it. Norman

why do people get all crazy over crayon and chalk marks? they were assembly aids for the workers on the lines.
personally, i'd like to see someone do an "ideal" resto, which would be what the "perfect" car coming off the line would look like in the mind of the engineers and designers that created the car.
no chalk marks, no runny paint, no overspray, perfect body panel gaps, blueprinted engine and trans.. just a perfect car.

Derrick, that might be your ideal resto but not how they where, there where chalk marks, overspray and unperfect body margins. We used the markings and correct overspray where it belonged but skiped the poor body margins!

well, if you're gonna do all the assembly line graffiti, then why not leave uneven body gaps and orange peel to make it look more "authentic"?
a full resto isn't a "full resto" unless it's done all the way.
