: 7/16" dimple rods what can or will they hold...
jester1 Apr 5th, 07, 9:48 AM :D As good as cheap china brand hbeams like eagles.
Anyone here have personal real world numbers of what they will hold. I remember back in the day people used to run them to high numbers but now with the advent of off shore hbeams, Im being told by local machine shops there only good to about 550hp or so.
any advice.
cstraub Apr 5th, 07, 10:10 AM 800HP the BBC dimple rod will hold no problem to 5600 rpm in a 509 Blower engines for many years. The rod will go 8400 rpm in a 470CID pull truck engine that makes in the high 600hp range for many years. Hard to beat that 4340 OEM rod.
jester1 Apr 5th, 07, 10:23 AM are you saying that the OEM 7/16" dimple rod is made of 4340???
This is out of a L88 if not mistaken
thanks
cstraub Apr 5th, 07, 10:47 AM The dimple rod is a Chrome Moly steel. Memory says yes it is a 4340 rod but no less then a 4130 Rod. With those 7/16" rod bolts they will take some load. Years ago in the 80's when there was no Eagle or Scat for "budget rods" we use to shot peen, bush the pin end, and put in SPS rod bolts in these for bracket, truck pull, and marine engines. I can't remember an engine with these coming in because the rod had failed.
Picking up a set of these, buying the SPS/B&B rod bolts from Wolfie then hanging these on a 4.25" stroke crank makes for a very strong very budget orienented BBC stroker engine.
69 Ratt Vette Apr 5th, 07, 10:53 AM I use them in both of the engines in my sig.......over 1000 hp and 7000 rpms in my drag car.
kjett Apr 5th, 07, 11:00 AM Those rods are tough! My friend runs them in this SSP/AA Camaro. Leaves at 7,200 and traps higher than that. I've got a set of them attached to a nice set of Wiseco pistons that I no longer need ;)
HP Hunter Apr 5th, 07, 11:04 AM The forgings are 4340 and were available with some optional rod bolts from Chevy over the counter. These rods will stand up to 800+ horsepower with no failure. They must be prepared properly to hold out at these numbers. Magnafluxed, flashing removed from the beams before magging, and I actually x-rayed them for more insurance. I still have the old x-ray sheets here. Faded some now.
Many of these engines left here and saw some heavy nitrous on top of the raw horsepower.
Never had one break in any engine. Years ago this was all you really had to work with unless there was no money limit. Back then when you went with aftermarket parts there was no cheap imported stuff available.

71454Chevelle Apr 5th, 07, 11:29 AM Are all OEM rods (both 3/8" & 7/16") made out of the same material?
In particular I was wondering about the 3/8" Truck Rods. These rods (when prepped correctly) seem to be pretty tough also.
jester1 Apr 5th, 07, 11:32 AM Thanks for the advice guys much appriciated. Ill will include this pic however. Two of my rod caps have been drilled for bearing pins will this affect my strength at all? Also Im pretty sure i have aftermarked bolt in them but they are not stamped with an manufactures markings, should I assume they are factory? They have the dimples for a stretch gauge.

Harold Sutton Apr 6th, 07, 9:41 PM Are all OEM rods (both 3/8" & 7/16") made out of the same material?
In particular I was wondering about the 3/8" Truck Rods. These rods (when prepped correctly) seem to be pretty tough also. The truck rods and the regular non dimpled rods are soft and won't take the beating the dimpled rod will. They were available in both size rod bolts but both the good rods had the raised bump on the side beams and are super tough. A local racer from here used to run them to 8500 RPM, which i don't recommend, but they are very strong when properly prepared.
pdq67 Apr 7th, 07, 12:04 AM Chris,
Cheap stroker only if you DON'T have to cam cut the crank's counterweights and then heavi-metal balance her!! I had to is all.........
As for truck/thumb rods w/ good bolts, 650 hp a quarter mile at a time at 6500 rpm!!
As always, jmho..
