: what is this rearend
gummy Apr 4th, 07, 7:29 PM Sorry no pics boys haven't replaced the camera yet .
It's a 12 bolt posi ,has the eyes on top of housing, measures out the same width as a 72 chevelle rearend, has pads on underside of tubes for shackles.
Found some stamping numbers on axel tube---R9
E
And on the housing--3959038
Have looked in identification sites but can"find what I'm lookin for
Thanx
Philip Apr 4th, 07, 7:53 PM Sounds like one that was converted to use in a leaf spring car. The fact the eyes are still there means it can go back into a coil spring car.
Look for more stamped numbers on the axle tube and post them.
big gear head Apr 4th, 07, 8:37 PM I've seen MANY Chevelle housings that have been done this way. I have one in my shop right now that I'm building for a customer. It had already been hacked up before he brought it to me. I won't do one that way.

What is your "housing date code" ?????....it is [L 4 9] = Dec.4,1969 on this particular rearend........ But it will look like this....

According to "Chevrolet by the numbers 1965-69", they show "NO" Chevelle code for 1969, that has the letter [R] or the number [9] in it's code.... The [E] below, is probably, the EATON positraction code.......
Having the upper ears on the housing, and the 1969 Chevelle housing casting number,
I am confident this 12 bolt rearend originally came, from a Chevelle.......
Could the numbers be [K 8].................................................. ............Don.
shooter Apr 5th, 07, 10:10 PM The only R9 for 69 I find is 2.56 posi, Chevy 12 bolt, used in the 69 Cutlass 442. Only Oshawa, Canada plant used the Chevy 12 bolt rears in the 442 starting in 68. You can see it listed here in the "C" (c-clip) differential section:
http://www.69olds.com/stats.html
The E under the code is for Eaton posi.
