: MartinSr. Etch primmer question

I'm doing my car panel by panel because of the limited time I have to work on it. I have the roof and the rear quarters in reasonable shape and have applied PPG etch primmer and then high build primmer K36 I think (I'm at work and couldn't swear that is what it is but I'm almost sure that is what it is) over that. My question is, when I do other panels, like the rockers, or door sills, etc., when I apply the etch I sometimes get a little overspray on the completed panel. Or when I sand out a spot that I was not happy with I sometimes expose bare metal so I spot in the etch and K36. As a result a little of the etch primmer may be laid over the K36 that surrounds the exposed spot. Somtimes if this happened I would just sand the dried etch off down to the K36 and then hit the area the next time I had some k36 in the gun. I hadn't really thought anything about this until somone said that the acid etch might lift the K36, and or eventually fish eye through the BC/CC. Am I in trouble here or is this one of those PYA recommendations by PPG. Is there any kind of sealer I should put on as a last stage before the BC/CC to prevent any problem I may have caused here?

thanks in advance for your response.

You have nothing to worry about. But, I have to say, you should be masking off those other panels. I do just as you do with my projects and I always mask off the adjacent panels just like they were in paint. My two cars that are in progress were done one panel at a time and both of them look like I primed them complete. There are looks of things that can happen when you have overspray. It really should be avoided.

Professor you have nothing to worry about, some etch primer wont touch that k36 but a lot might. When I get ready to respray my 2K primer(K36 and K38 I use) I first mix up a small batch of etch and very lightly spray it over the exposed bare metal areas. Just keep the etch to a miminal. In the tech sheets you will see that etch primers is not one of the compatiable topcoats for K36, the reps that I talked too all say that the etch wont hurt the 2K just keep it small and on the bare metal...Eric
