ok, non chevy, but you guys are the brightest i know.

i just bought a 65 fairlane, the tranny slips, and the tranny guys around here are crooks. i'm pretty sure it's a c-4, three speed auto. instead of getting ripped off by loacl tranny shops, should i just get a c-4? is it pretty straight foward? any tricks i need to know. easy swap? or nightmare?

is it aluminum or cast iron? The C4's usually start slipping when the seals get old and hard and no longer do their job.

pretty sure cast. yes it's slipping a little. the tranny shops around here are crazy expensive. last tranny i had somebody look at, they wanted $1,500 to rebuild. i'm pretty sure i can buy one for less and drop it in myself....

if cast, most likely a Cruise o matic, might try a Ford forum, www.corral.net would be my choice.

It's most likely a C-4 Curse-O-Matic :D . Not that it makes much difference as to the trans since the 170 - 200 -289 all used the C-4, but what engine do you have? In '65 for Fairlanes only you could get a solid lifter 289 271-horse with a special Curse-O-Matic.

I would imagine you could get a bench rebuild on a C-4 for closer to $500 probably.

a lot of them old Ford have the FMX trans- which i think was made out of cast iron and weighed almost as much as the engine it was bolted to..
